The Silver Screen Oasis

Showing early 11/16, Garfield gets outta the joint to see his brother graduate college and settle a few scores. Warner's obviously had no idea what to do with their promising young star and while it's a shame to see him wasted in such meager fare, this is another opportunity to see him work his magic onscreen. This film has not shown on TCM in over eight years, so grab it while you can!

Thank You ... Mr. Ark for sharing this info. I remember seeing this movie in my college days and I like it very much. I will be definitively setting my DVR for this movie. I like both John Garfield and Brenda Marshall.

I decided to stay up (took a short power nap) and watch this movie. It was one great film to watch and I'm amazed by the stellar acting of all players both major and minor. John Garfield was superb in this movie and certainty enjoyed watching this gem of a film back in 1940.

Typical Warner Bros. fare. I liked it. But boy...the Italian Defamation League might've had a case.

I don't recall seeing this one. That's why I clicked on this old thread. The movie sounds fun, if not memorable. Typical Warner Brothers? That's enough for me! The only studio whose work of a certain period I instantly recognize. Urban? Desperate? A sociological thread? Must be Warners!

Looking at the poster, I want to find Victor Mature under that fedora. Not a sensitive method actor!

Oh yeah, Miss G. it was on during a recent Garfield day. Brenda Marshall's in it ( as the poster shows. ) And as soon as you start watching it, you can predict ev'ry situation...ev'ry line. Classic 1940's Brothers Warner.

I hope I can catch EAST OF THE RIVER one day. I just found BODY AND SOUL on YouTube; it's an old favorite that I haven't seen in a while.

I remember seeing this movie over and over again when I was growing up. If you like Garfield, you'll like it. Yes, it's predictable, but there's a joy in that too.

Me too. I think the word predictable is overused in film criticism, and doesn't really mean a whole lot to me. I've seen movies that were to die for that were predictable.
