Michael Curtiz, a tyrant, but most versatile director

Post by stuart.uk »

I would say if you judged who was the best director on versatilty, you'd be hard pushed to see passed Michael Curtiz. i wish i could say he was a nice guy, but from what i can gather he was a bit of a tyrant.

Westerns-Dodge City, Sante Fa Trail, Virginia City and The Comancheros
Musicals-White Christmas.
Drama Musicals-Yankee Doodle Dandy. I'll See You In My Dreams, Young Man With A Horn and King Creole
Drama-Angels With Dirty Faces, Mildred Pierce
Romantic Comedy-Trouble Along The Way
Sport-Jim Thorpe All American
War-Dive Bomber and Casablanca

Hi Stuart! I love Michael Curtiz' movies and he's definitely in what I might describe as my "second tier" of great directors. He could do it all! For auteurists who are too strict, I think they find this limits him but I say the opposite. It shows how truly talented he was. His powers were waining during his final film, The Comancheros, but boy, you'd never know it.

I love his movies for Flynn, especially Captain Blood.

i think of all the fils he directed, i think Trouble Along The Way is the biggest surprise. it is a most underratted film and Curtiz showed he could hold is own in Capra Romantic Comedy country

Trouble Along the Way is full of surprises. A sweet change of pace for all involved.

hi Miss G

As Duke told Donna 'Hey you've got great legs!

i find myself comparing Marie Windsors nasty piece work in TATW to her more sympathetic role oppisite Duke in the much later Cahill United States Marshal

I'm shocked -- shocked, I say, that one from the U.K. and one from Dreamland did not mention a little movie with a Bette Davis, Errol Flynn, Vincent Price and Olivia de Haviland called THE PRIVATE LIVES OF ELIZABETH & ESSEX -- a nice historical costume romance drama.
