By golly, Valentino beat the Academy of Motion Pictures to the draw regarding awards for acting, since the first Oscar was presented in 1929.
He certainly was ahead of his time.

Um, Mongo, that photo of Donnie Dunagan as Peter in Son of Frankenstein completely creeped me out. Having seen that movie recently, I thought that the poor kid was almost as strange as that other child actor of the '40s, Richard Nichols, (he's the allegedly French-born lad with the odd southern accent in All This and Heaven Too, among other movies). Why did those stage mothers insist on curling the poor tyke's hair so tightly and having them speak in such a mannered way? Jeez, if these boys ever made it back to a public school yard, life must have been a living hell for them. Through no fault of their own, either, I suspect.

Btw, that last photo of Monty & Liz looks like the battle of the big eyebrows, doesn't it? Thanks for keeping it real, Mongo.

Mitchum looks quite handsome in that photo. Although I like his acting, I've never really been able to warm to his looks, but I suspect that he had a face very difficult to photograph, and that he looked a lot hotter in person.

I think Gale Storm looks essentially the same as she did 50+ years ago.

Moira, child actor Donnie Dunagan does appear to be somewhat creepy in that image. He went on to voice Disney's "Bambi".
Dunagan later became a career Marine (1952-77), serving in Vietnam and working in counter intelligence. Now retired at age 74.

Richard Nichols on the other hand was a cutie. In fact Bette Davis adored him while making "All This, and Heaven Too".
He left the screen in 1944. At age 72 and the father of two he is living in Alabama.

Judith, I too thought that was one of the better images of Mitchum.
By the way, it was Gale Storm that started me collecting 45rpm records with her hit song "I Hear You Knocking". I still have it.

That full-length mirror in the picture above was Hepburn's own, which she toted around with her on location shoots. Just another piece of professional equipment.

Thanks for the photo of Maureen Stapleton. The most thoroughly riveting theater experience I ever had was seeing Stapleton in The Glass Menagerie. She dominated the stage, without any histrionics or tricks, in a way I've never seen before or since (although venerable actor/teacher Alvin Epstein, who I saw this past summer in Endgame, came close). Stapleton could be very good on the screen, but never in the way I saw her achieve on stage.

Gee, Mongo, I'm not troubled by Ruth Etting's pre-code decolletage, (though she's definitely going to catch a chest cold that way), but her "children of the damned" eyes are creeping me out. I'd save that pic for next Halloween, pal.
