From a couple back - especially lovely photos of Robert Montgomery and Laurence Olivier. No wonder...

I just love the photo of Jay Silverheels! How unusual to see an image of him smiling.

And, by the way, I wonder who it was who deemed those artificial black marks on the face "beauty marks" (cf. Norma Talmadge). Looks like she just swatted a fly on her cheekbone. Ick.

The radio program "The Big Broadcast" which runs on Sunday nights in NYC has over the last few weeks played a lot of Al Jolson recordings, and there's no doubt about it -- the man could sing, and beautifully, too. If your only experience of Jolson has been the old chestnuts he's associated with (like "Mammy"), you should check out his entire opus -- it's very impressive. I have Jolson's version of "Liza" on my iPod; it's just beautiful. My stepfather told me that when he was in the Army during WWII, he was in the audience in France for a Jolson USO performance, and the men were going crazy, shouting for more, more, more. Now I get why, and that's only through recordings. I can imagine the what the energy of a live Jolson performance must have been like. And we ain't seen nothin' yet.

Judith, one of my favorite movies is Thoroughly Modern Millie with Julie Andrews. There is a really funny scene, when she and her "butterfly boy", Jimmie (Edward-sigh-Fox) are necking in his red roadster. Her beauty mark keeps moving from spot to spot till it finally ends up onhis nose

Thanks, Birdy, Glad you enjoyed them.

Judith, I got a taste of the great Jolson when Larry Parks (in a fine performance) lip-sync for him in both "The Jolson Story" and "Jolson Sings Again". The songs Jolson sang were fantastic.
George Burns once said that Jolson was the best showman in the business.

John Dall was in precious few movies, but Andy Cullen (THE MAN WHO CHEATED HIMSELF), Brandon Shaw (ROPE) and, especially, Bart Tare (GUN CRAZY) are among my favorite characters in film. In that picture, it appears that he has not yet met Annie Laurie Starr to wipe that smile off of his face.

Mr. Goodheart dear:

I wouldn't ask if I could find the answer, but I'm just not looking in the proper places.

Do you know how many fairly well-known actors and actresses (other than Carol Lombard) served in WWII and never came back? I fully realize it's a morbid question, but we were so lucky that the likes of Gable, Stewart, Fonda, and so many others returned, but I don't recall reading of any famous silent star that might have fallen.

Thank you.
.
Anne

Anne, other than Lombard, Glenn Miller and Leslie Howard I'm not sure of other celebrity war casualties.
There is one I'm aware of and he shouldn't be forgotten:

'Our Gang' child actor Bobby 'Wheezer' Hutchins was killed while attempting to land his aircraft (a B-26 Marauder) at Merced Army Air Corps Field (Merced, California) during the final 30 minutes of his basic training in 1945. He was 20 years old.
