Before I saw Arsenic I knew him only from the Hitchcock films he'd done; the comic pratfalls and exaggerated movements/acting came as a total surprise to me. It prompted me to immediately start seeking out all of his work, and further led me to becoming a huge classic cinema fan. For that, Arsenic will always hold a special place in my heart, even if by now it's not even in my top 10 Grant films.

Cary was good in just about everything. I think his most solid and thorough acting comes through in the Phillip Barry based comedy-dramas. HOLIDAY and THE PHILADELPHIA STORY. The stories are so well written it's Heaven for a good actor. These films are also the best work of Ms. Hepburn.

This was harder than I thought it would be. I had to leave off Gunga Din, Penny Serenade, and Houseboat. Maybe I should have had a tie for the tenth slot!
1. Charade
2. North By Northwest
3. To Catch a Thief
4. The Awful Truth
5. Holiday
6. That Touch of Mink
7. His Girl Friday
8. The Talk of the Town
9. Bringing up Baby
10. Father Goose

Speaking of "gate-way" works, it was Philip Barry's name on these two films that prompted me to look into other New York playwrights of his era...and to form a complete circle, that brought me back to Hollywood to learn more about screenwriters in general.

This is a fabulous list Lomm! ... I would have a hard time doing a top ten movie list for him because I haven't met one that I don't like so far.

To Catch a Thief and Charade would be 1 and 2 respectfully and Holiday and Bringing Up Baby would be tied for 3rd. The rest of them would be difficult for me to place because he is such an outstanding actor that can do a variety of roles without skipping a beat.

He has versatility and class as an actor.

Lomm, I'm so glad you brought Cary up in the thread list.

My top ten Cary movies are (in order):

Mr. Lucky
His Girl Friday
The Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer
Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House
None But the Lonely Heart
Holiday
Talk of the Town
Sylvia Scarlett
In Name Only
Penny Serenade
Only Angels Have Wings
The Awful Truth

You may notice that my top ten is actually my top 12. That's because I just can't leave off the last two. Besides, I always cheat when we play these kinds of games where I have to narrow it down to a manageable list. :D

Miss G, Red, and Chris, I'd love to see your top ten Cary films. And anyone else's for that matter.

So glad to have this thread on Cary.
There are just so many favorites but I particularly like Talk of the Town and his character 'Leopold Dilg'.
Then there's Roger O. Thornhill in North By Northwest.
Of course he's on top form in His Girl Friday and Bringing Up Baby and Arsenic and Old Lace.
And he and Deborah Kerr are so romantic in An Affair to Remember.
My favorites of his co-stars - Irene Dunne, Katharine Hepburn,Jean Arthur.

Thinking about it, The Awful Truth is probably the best of Grant's comedic roles. Very ahead of its time in terms of the treatment and attitudes toward marriage. I wouldn't be surprised if modern audiences could appreciate it even more than viewers of the time, and see even more humor in all the situations.

Except for Charade, it's hard for me to rank his films in order. I believe they are all at such a high standard, it really depends on what I'm in the mood for at the time. :D

1. Charade
2. To Catch a Thief
3. Notorious
4. Only Angels Have Wings
5. The Grass is Greener
6. Indiscreet
7. Suspicion
8. People Will Talk
9. Holiday
10. North by Northwest

I really like his comedies the most.

1. The Awful Truth.
2. My Favorite Wife
3. Holiday
4. Bringing Up Baby
5. Charade
6. Mr. Blandings
7. North By Northwest
8. Talk of The Town
9. The Philadelphia Story.
10. Bachelor and The Bobby Soxer.

I'm not that much of a fan of "Arsenic" for about the same reasons as Grant. Any number of other films follow in close order. Things like "Indiscreet," "People Will Talk," "Monkey Business," "Room For One More" and I even like "Crisis."

Thanks guys! I forgot Charade and Notorious...

I didn't include Philadelphia Story on my list, because, even though I would rank it in my favorite movies, I don't think it really shows off Cary as much as some of the other actors. So I picked movies that I watch for Cary's performance.
