To unsophisticated Western eyes, "they" are all Asian and so the same.

I remember in THE CIRCUS OF DR. LAO, scruffy old cowboys comment on Tony Randall walking through town. "What's a Japanese doin' here?" (he might have said "Jap") -- "He's not Japanese, he's a Chinaman" -- "How do you know that?" -- "Cause I ain't stupid!"

I've got the overly sticky homefront drama TENDER COMRADE on in the background. This was criticized as being "collectivist" because a bunch of women decide to share a house waiting for their sweethearts to come home from WWII.
It may or may not be, but regardless, I find this movie very boring.

I remember reading The Circus of Dr. Lao when I was a teenager. It's a fairly
racy book (and a very short one), much more so than the movie. In parts
it even gets a little Sinclair Lewisy. I haven't seen the movie in years. It's
okay, especially some of the special effects, but nothing special.

The war turned that old "woman's place is in the home" thing on its head by shoving them into factories and then criticizing their homelife? I agree the movie is too boring to really try to wrap my head around the implications, though I originally watched it because it was written by Dalton Trumbo and I expected more. I remember from the Trumbo movie with Bryan Cranston that this movie was used as evidence against him by the HUAC when they investigated him, so no 4 ****'s from the Senate. This showing got under my radar. so thanks for the book report.

By the way, how long did she think the war was going to last, with her 127 tubes of lipstick?

I remember Ginger refusing to say a line in the film like "Share and share alike, that's the American way or democracy" or something similar, saying it was Communistic. (Leila again). That may be the line they changed it too, above.

I love Tony Randall (nice Jewish boy from Tulsa, Oklahoma) as Dr. Lao, mainly because the character is supposed to be a "put-on" for the Western folks so they can learn his wise (but occasionally preachy) ways. I love the Leigh Harline score as well. (he actually first used it in MAN OF THE WEST). Never read the book.

Probably audiences of every political stripe ate this movie up at the time. Ginger is so insufferably sincere (like in KITTY FOYLE; in fact, she gets to exclaim "Judas Priest!" again in TENDER COMRADE) Rogers may have thought "I'll get a second Oscar!" but sorry, it was Jennifer Jones' turn for SONG OF BERNADETTE.

Edward G. Robinson is wonderful in everything, even a Norwegian farmer in OUR VINES HAVE TENDER GRAPES. Apologies to Margaret O'Brien fans but I only tolerate her in every movie she's ever been in just to enjoy the other actors I do like.

I always felt "Tootie" needed psychiatric help. (the character, not O'Brien)

If you can make it in Tulsa, you can make it anywhere. I should really read it
again, haven't read it in years. It's a rather interesting well-written book. The
movie only gets part of it.
