Yes, you're right, R.R. Miscasting aside, I enjoy SON OF DRACULA. And part of the fun is the awkwardness of Chaney trying to play an aristocratic count and spouting dialogue sans gerunds.

There's no getting around the fact that Lon was badly miscast, but Universal thought this was a good vehicle to cash in on the name. Putting aside the fact that he's probably the most "chunky" vampire in all of filmdom, the movie has a lot of things going for it.
The swampy setting is quite well done and adds a few chills, the special effects are decent and the supporting cast is excellent. Bob Paige, Louise Allbritton, Evelyn Ankers and Frank Craven are in top form. Robert Siodmak did a nice job directing, but brother Curt, who wrote the script, could have been a little more inventive. I always found it a bit disappointing that the all-knowing, all-seeing, invincible Count Dracula couldn't come up with a better disguise. Spelling his name backwards and calling himself "Alucard" is rather pathetic, yet Siodmak would have us believe everybody was fooled for the first half of the script! Still, it's a fun flick.

Louise Allbritton is great as the "dark" (in more ways than one, in contrast to blonde Evelyn Ankers) sister in SON OF DRACULA.

I so agree, Brian. I like the guy who's in love with the lady vampire. For that matter, I like the lady vampire. This movie is not bad.

Just watched “SON OF DRACULA” and enjoyed it. It has some good solid character actors in it. ( Yes...including my Sammykins. ) I love Universal monster films. The movie takes itself seriously, there’s no wink and nod with it. Maybe that’s why I love ‘em. And the actors take it all seriously. As for Dracula’s floating across the bayou...NOW I see where Spike Lee got that move. My favorite Scream Queen, Evelyn Ankers is in it and Robert Paige is good. Plus I love that they recycle the same Universal monster scores. I don't mind a beefy Dracula.
