That's right Skimpole.
One of the great, magical love stories, based on a novel by George du Maurier, whose novel Trilby was adapted as the film Svengali a few years earlier, and whose granddaughter's novel Rebecca was adapted to a film a few years later.
The children at the beginning of the film were played by Dickie Moore and Virginia Weidler. Their scenes have an incredible pathos.
As adults, the couple enters each other's dreams, the way Aragorn and Arwen do, to some extent, in LOTR. Peter Ibbetson was called "a triumph of surrealist thought" by Andre Breton, who basically invented surrealism. Directed by Henry Hathaway and shot by Charles Lang, the film was an adventurous choice for a major Hollywood studio in 1935.

THAT FORSYTE WOMAN is not the movie, although it does feature one of my favorite Errol Flynn performances.
Another clue:
While the person that the man is grieving is not his relative, the character who has died is portrayed by a relative of the actor who portrays grieving man.
