Thanks, Nancy.
Your friend's a couple years younger nor me but I'll quit jitterbuggin'. I had to give up football, too.
Seriously. I'm glad she recovered. I know what she went through.
Thanks, again .... mel

Hello everyone,

I got here by going to "stickdeath.com" and turning left.

Actually, I've been here from the get-go, since the invasion of the "trolls" at TCM, but I don't recall who it was that first told me of an alternative. I seem to recall a brief stopover at a "Yahoo" sponsored site along the way. I also seem to recall that at its' inception, the Oasis was known by another name. Does anyone recall what it was? Not that it's of any importance, "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet." I'm just thankful that someone was nice enough to extend me an invitation to join. Although I take more than I give, I do what I can to try to contribute something meaningful when I do post. Thanks to everyone for their knowledge and for taking the time to share it.

As always,

Hollis

Oh my gosh, Hollis.

You reminded me that we used to have another name. I know at Yahoo we were the TCM Refugee Camp or something like that.

But for the life of me I can't remember what our name was when we first got here before we took suggestions and voted on this one.

You know I can tell you what I did thirty years ago but I can't remember something that happened a year ago.

Mid-century modern (middle age) is definitely not for sissies.

It's back in the archives no doubt.

We were TCM Refugees, but the URL was http://plasticage.net (which still works, BTW).

I just did a Google search for classic movie forums (or something similar). There aren't many in my neck of the woods that are even slightly interested in classics, so I was grateful to find this message board.

Thanks, Nancy [and moirafinnie].

I lived in West Virginia for most of my life, then moved to South Carolina. Neither have been what you might call a classic movie buff's paradise. In my early 20s, I had to join online film rental websites to be able to see a lot of classics - our local cable company didn't get TCM and AMC was going downhill just about that time. What's more, 75% of the inventory at my local library and video rental outlets seemed to come from the last 25 years or so (of course, they all had the popular classics that are easy to find).

Now I'm living in SC, and classics are much easier to find these days (especially with NetFlix), but it's hard to find others (except online) who enjoy viewing or discussing them. I assume that there aren't enough cinematic bells and whistles to keep most people occupied.

I honestly can't remember how I found SSO, but it was tied to your having Mick LaSalle here as a guest. I saw that news somewhere, promptly signed up and saw many many reasons not to leave immediately afterwards.

I've been an email pal of Scott O'Brien's for the past year or so (I wrote to Bearmanor Media to let them know I got a quote from his Kay Francis book mentioned in the local paper and they forwarded my email to Scott...). So Scott mentioned that he was making a guest appearance on Silver Screen Oasis. I looked it up and here I am. I love the author interviews - have read the 2 Scott's (O'Brien & Eyman) and Eve Golden's so far. Fascinating stuff. I may not get any work done until I've read ever post on this site!

Thank you for posting, Jenny P. I love your avatar, could you please identify the beauty in it, since I'm not certain who it might be? It's heartening to learn that many people read our exchanges with our visiting authors and enjoy them too. Any friend of Scott O'B.'s is a certainly a welcome friend of this site!
