Dust off your six-shooters, choose the Top-Gun Western ever!

Post by cinemalover »

Howdy pardners!

In a follow up to our popular Choose the Best Movie of All-Time competition , it is time to have a shoot-out for your Bestavorite (a mildly disturbing combination of best and or favorite to avoid all those discussions again) Western ever made.

You, as the participant, will have to define the western genre for yourself. Can it include comic westerns you ask? You betcha'! How about silents, B-westerns or "modern" westerns? Yes, yes and yes. And anything else that you feel would fall into this category.

The rules:
Everyone that would like to particpate (and all members, past, present and future are equally invited) must submit a list of their top 15 westerns. You may choose to order them or not, as you see fit. I will say that we learned with the last competition that if you feel strongly about certain films you will want to number them because it could well be the difference for a film making the cut-off or being eliminated. If you choose not to number your films they will all be given a value of 7 when it comes time to add up their worth and determine their seeding. Please don't number them if you don't want them prioritized.

All entries must be submitted by February 1st at 11:59 pm (Pacific). As with last time if you suibmit a list you can alter it right up until the deadline. I will tally all the votes and take the top 32 films and seed them accordingly (just like last time, only with 32 films instead of 64). We will then match them all up (#1 vs. #32, #2 vs. #31, etc...) and do an elimination vote for each round.

In our Best Movie competition our community had two westerns that survived until the final four, which bodes well for interest in the genre here.

Good luck, and start posting your lists right here, whenever you're ready.

Gidde y'up!

1. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
2. The Searchers
3. Rio Grande
4. Man of the West
5. 3 Bad Men
6. Stagecoach
7. High Noon
8. My Darling Clementine
9. Hondo
10. Rio Bravo
11. Shane
12. The Far Country
13. Garden of Evil
14. The Hanging Tree
15. Fort Apache

THAT was tough!! I wanted to include one of my most beloved westerns, Angel and the Bad Man but I leaned more toward westerns that were impressive in some way as well as entertaining. I guess I just don't think this little movie is very "impressive", much as I adore it.

EDITED to include 3 Bad Men (sacrifice: The Hanging Tree)

Great list, Miss Goddess.
A nice way to start us off. I suspect that many on your list will make it into the 32 team competition.

Dewey,
Another wonderful list. You and I seem to agree on some Spaghetti Westerns. I think Once Upon a Time in the West is superb! Henry Fonda gone bad! It also contains one of my favorite Charles Bronson performances.

This is harder when you have to stay in one category. I'm with Miss Goddess when it comes to which ones to list. A big part of my love of westerns is my equal love of history, so I get a lot of my history out of the good westerns. Well, no matter what or how, here is my list for now:

1. The man who shot Liberty Valence
2. The Searchers
3. Two Rode Together
4. Westward the Women
5. Fort Apache
6. The Way West
7. Northwest Passage
8. Across the Wide Missouri
9. The Alamo (1960)
10. Cheyenne Autumn
11. Warlock
12. Magnificent Seven
13. Ox-Bow Incident
14. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
15. Stagecoach

Chances are likely I'll be back before this time frame closes. Sorry about the size of the letters, I was practicing.

I am not a great fan of 'top-lists', but I find this one rather fun, being a fan of westerns. :)

Without any particular order:
  • Devil's Doorway (1950)
    Pursued (1947)
    Colorado Territory (1949)
    Stars in My Crown (1950)
    Lonely Are the Braves (1962)
    Across the Wide Missouri (1951)
    Johnny Guitar (1954)
    The Last Hunt (1956)
    Red River (1948)
    The Searchers (1956)
They Died With Their Boots On (1940)
    Duel in the Sun (1945)
    Rio Bravo (1958)
    Support Your Local Sheriff (1969)
    The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976)

Wow, everyone was rarin' to go! I thought I'd be amongst the first to post, but y'all got here before me.

Westerns are my weakest genre. My list will probably seem lame to the afficianados. I'm betting I'm the only one who'll add The Harvey Girls to the list. I'm sure there are many that I could have listed (High Noon, My Daughter Clementine, etc.), but it's been decades since I've seen them so it's difficult for me to judge.

1 C'era una volta il West (Once Upon a Time in the West)
2 Red River
3 Stagecoach
4 The Searchers
5 Tôkyô nagaremono (Tokyo Drifter)
6 Girl Crazy (1943)
7 Shane
8 The Harvey Girls
9 Shichinin no samurai (Seven Samurai)
10 Brokeback Mountain
11 Destry Rides Again
12 Giant
13 Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
14 A Man Called Horse
15 Silverado
