As I read it, they put wings and draped material on them.JackFavell wrote:I know what you mean. Perhaps it's a good thing that a church took it over though, since they have preserved it very carefully. I wonder if those naked statues mentioned in the article are hidden away in a back closet somewhere....

Ah, I missed that! All I remember reading was that they thought they were not quite right for a church, I assumed they removed the offending statues.

A toast indeed, to statues draped in cloth, covering what is not meant to be seen by the devout but what was allowed to be seen in the 1920s by anyone who paid their admission. God love those days.

Theresa and I are frequently, though not always, on the same wavelength. We most certainly agree about Jeanne Moreau and Lee Remick!

Thanks everyone for the compliments on my avatar. I wish I could take credit for Jeanne Moreau's stunning looks and ability to evoke a mood.

They do share certain qualities, that's for sure.

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
Back to my Warren William movies again.
The Dark Horse, not he best William movie I've seen but he does have Bette Davis as a costar although she doesn't have a great deal to do. She's his secretary and he is a political campaign manager for Guy Kibbee as honest and thick as youj can get and that's how they promote him. The highlight was Kibbee preparing to read one of Lincoln's speeches as his own only to find that his opponent had done the same thing.
I much preferred The Beauty and the Boss, the boss William and the beauty the lovely Marian Marsh, fast becoming a favourite, she steals so many scenes from under everyone's noses. Warren William is a tyrannical boss who has an eye for the ladies, his last secretary was dismissed and then re employed as his lover and when 'the little mouse' Marian Marsh applies for the secretary's job (in a brilliant scene) he can't say no. She's a super secretary but a little plain (yes, really beautiful Marian) but she has eyes on her boss and when she puts that Parisian dress on he's all eyes and she looses her job. A lovely film based on an original stage play.

That early Technicolor footage is wonderful, it evokes such a mood! I think that even though it captures one moment in time, there is something timeless about it.
