The top grossing films of 1930-1934

Post by myrnaloyisdope »

As per the exhibitor-oriented trade journal Motion Picture Herald. Two things strike me as odd, the omission of King Kong, and the presence of Maedchen in Uniform, I never would have expected a German film about lesbian schoolgirls to have found an audience in America, and yet it apparently was a big hit until anti-German sentiment stalled its success. Films listed are in order of gross.

Cimarron
Hell's Angels
Trader Horn
Check and Double Check
City Lights
Min and Bill

Animal Kingdom
The Kid From Spain
The Private Life of Henry VIII

The omission of "King Kong" is puzzling to say the least. Does this mean that "Son of Kong" made more money than its parent film?

While typing the above, I originally wrote "Song of Kong." The mind reels at the potential a movie with that title would have.

If they could do a musical version of Reefer Madness, why not Son of Kong? Some of the songs the film might contain:

My Gorilla is My Butler--Sly and the Family Stone

Gorilla, You’re a Desperado--Warren Zevon

You Drive Me Ape (You Big Gorilla)--The Dickies

Plenty of great “monkey” songs, too. Let’s get cracking! :D

I'm dumbstruck that The House of Rothschild was the top earner of 1934.
