Post by stuart.uk »

Some well known UK singers of the 1950s, made movies with varing degrees of success.

Max Bygraves, who had sang A Couple Of Swells at the Palace theatre with Judy Garland had a small role as a coachman in Tom Brown's School Days. By the mid 50s Bygraves was a major star in the UK and made Charley Moon and with American actress Shirley Jones , Bobbikins . However, his best film was probabaly the realistic 1960 Spare The Rode, where he played a school teacher in a deprived working class area. Here's Max singing to future Bond girl Shirley Eaton in Charley Moon

Tommy Steele made The Tommy Steele Story, where he played himself in a biopic about his first yr in show-biz.Other 50s films include Tommy The Torador and The Duke Wore Jeans. In the 60s he made more movies including Half A Sixpence, but walked away from movies by the 70s. Here's a cracking song from TDWJ

Cliff Richard had a small role as a troubled teenager in Serious Charge with Anthony Quayle and Andrew Ray. He had a bigger, but still supporting role in Expresso Bongo with Laurence Harvey and Sylvia Syms. He would later star in 60s classics The Young Ones And Summer Holiday. Here'sthe trailor of Serious Charge

Anthony Newley was a child star, who was known for his acting in movies like Oliver Twist, but he became a pop star overnight after making Idol On Parade, followed by The Lady Is A Square. It's probably fair to say, due to his massive success with stage musicals, this hugely talented perfromer underachieved in movies

In the 50s Harry Secombe was one of The Goons with Spike Milligan and Peter Sellers on BBC radio. In 1969 he was a world class tenor as Mr. Bumble in Oliver. In the 50s Secombe made movies like Forces Sweetheart and Jet Storm, an airport type of movie a decade ahead of it's time with Stanley Baker and Richard Attenbourgh in the Van Heflin type role
