Sunnyside Up (1929)

Sunnyside Up (1929)

Molly (Janet Gaynor in her first all talking movie) is in love with Jack. She has never met him, but just cuts pictures of him out of the newspaper. Jack (Charles Farrell) is engaged to the flighty Jane (Sharon Lynn, who had previously appeared in the stage show).

Jack storms out of a July 4th party and drives to New York where he crashes his car and meets Molly. Jack is impressed when Molly sings and asks her to perform at a charity function, and pretend that they are in love, with a view to making Jane jealous. Jane does become jealous, but Molly flees when the word spreads that Jack is paying the rent, implying that she is his mistress.

Realising that it is Molly that he loves Jack gives Jane the flick, and pursues Molly to New York.

Jackie Cooper also has a small part, reciting a couple lines of poetry before fleeing in response to the call of nature.

I'm so glad you had a chance to enjoy this early talkie musical, Fossy. If you would like to see some interesting (and divergent) past comments on this site about this movie, and a clip from one of the more eccentric numbers, please click below:

Thank you for that Moirafinnie. I visited both sites. The sound was dumped on by a couple of members, but let`s face it sound did improve rapidly over the next couple of years.
The film clip sounded better in the movie, and the movie was visually better. Something must have been lost between the movie and youtube.

I see that Sunrise is mentioned. The version I have is called Sunrise: A song Of Two Humans I have put off watching this movie because it is a silent. I find that I must give silent movies my undivided attention. I can`t do the ironing or even reach for a cuppa in case I miss something. Now that my appetite has been whetted I suppose I must watch it.

Fossy, I agree about the time and attention commitment needed to watch silents, but Sunrise... is so worth your time. It has become my favorite movie, period.
