On the DVD for Gunga Din it is stated that Robert Montgomery was considered for one of the three male lead. Thank Heaven for small favors. Ms Haskell said she had never seen this classic adventure film that couldn't have had a better cast. 8)

Also Sabu was first choice to play Gunga Din.

That might have made more sense--I loved this movie, but always thought Gunga Din should have been younger, the way he hero-worships the military.
