After Molly

Postby ken123 » Mon Apr 16, 2007 7:09 am

Molly Haskell was the worst co -host ( hostess ) that " The Essentials " had and IMHO Carrie Fisher while not bad is not very good either. Who would you like to see co - hosting ?

Potential Co-Hosts

Postby moirafinnie » Mon Apr 16, 2007 4:42 pm

I'd like to see Robert Osborne continue as co-host with more film scholars and older actors, but I'm a real dreamer. Maybe for the older actors it would be less of a strain than doing hours of a long interview and would enable them to have their say about some of their own movies too:

Scholars as Co-Hosts:
Jeanine Basinger
Rudy Behlmer
Scott Eyman
Joseph McBride
A. Scott Berg
James Ursini
Alain Silver
Eddie Muller
Gary Wills
Martin Scorsese

Actors as Co-Hosts:
James Whitmore
Richard Widmark
Jean Simmons
Dean Stockwell
Shirley Temple
Jane Withers (why not, she's a hoot)

I like the suggestion of older performers or scholars. The best one they had in my opinion, was Peter Bogdanovich, because he knew so many of the people invovled and could tell amusing anecdotes about them. I wouldn't mind having him back, in fact. Another possibility is Nick Clooney, but I'm really dreaming there!

I enjoy the idea of the scholars very much.

Debbie would be great...

Also, I think James Garner would be good. I would love to see Julie Andrews and James Garner together!
Sincerely,
Christy

Co-hosting duties...

Bring back Sydney Pollack (if he'll agree to it) as "The Essentials" co-host. He has an engaging personality, speaks very well and knows what he's talking about! He is a multiple Oscar winner, is he not? Like so many other ventures, it's hard to improve upon the original!

Welcome SHolmes!

Postby moirafinnie » Sat Apr 21, 2007 12:14 am

Welcome, SHolmes. I'm glad you're here.

If I may chime in, we've just been getting our bearings with this fine new site and have been proceeding slowly in letting others know about it by invitation. As you know, things over on TCM have made communication difficult at times, though we all wish them well. I'm hoping that this might be a nice complement to the TCM site, offering a friendly, actively moderated variety option to those interested in discussion. Hope that you'll take your time looking through it. There's alot to absorb already and we've only been up here for a week.

I have to agree with Moira.

I would be glued to my television every Saturday evening to hear Robert O and Marty Scorcese host The Essentials.

Ditto on that. I rarely watch The Essentials because I usually have the films and most of the time the commentators tell me nothing new.

There was a thread about best commentaries on TCM and I said that although I don't have enough time in the day to watch everyones commentaries all the Scorcese commentaries have been watched.

Although he has made some great films I enjoy his articles, documentaries, and commentaries even more. He has a true gift in that direction. It's one thing to know information, but quite another to be able to explain it and put it in a format that is interesting and people can enjoy.
