why should it stop at ten?

Favorite Five Factors:

1. A short, arbitrary limit makes one pause, think, and not list every movie one happens to like.

2. It encourages discussion because shorter lists promote diversity.

3. It saves space and makes the list readable.

4. Top Ten is alliterative. Okay, so are Top Two, Top Three, Top Twelve, Top Thirteen, all the Top Twenty+ & Thirty+, and Top Thousand. But see Nos. 1-3.

5. Because.

I should have put "Straw Dogs" on my list as well as Roy Ward Baker's "Asylum."

"Love and Death" just works for me on so many levels. The Prokofiev score. The fact that the hero spends the film in love with a woman named Sonia who never really notices that he loves her. (Don't ask.) The jokes. "I'm dead and they're talking about wheat."

"Manhattan" was always a film I admired more than liked. I think it is in eclipse now because of the scandal. I have heard several people say "We should have known when we saw "Manhattan" that Woody would do something like that." And they say it just as people in another time and place once said "We should have known that Comrade Radomirov was always an enemy of the people."

Thanks for explaining your feelings about Love and Death, Mike. You made me laugh with your last line, though in a rueful way.

One polite way of saying no, followed by two attempts at swaying logic, a good cop bad cop routine, and finally the brutal hammer:"Because I say so." You'd think I asked to stay out all night for the Prom.

Exactly.

I was confident that everyone with a child, or who at some point was a child, would understand the irrefutable logic of No. 5. Concise and yet chock-full of meaning.

And who said you could even go to the Prom, young man?

Do us all a favor. Go sulk in your room, THEN take off the dress!

LOVE AND DEATH was well reviewed when it came out. Everybody I know likes it. If it's overlooked, maybe that's because it's so literary. MANHATTAN is superb. Sophisticated and touching. Along with "Annie" and "Hannah" it completes the great Woody Allen set. He may never top that.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel!...no reservations about it.

To pun jail you go, Wendy!

MR. A., how can I trust what you say about Giallo when your fashion sense is all screwy:

Angora doesn't do a thing for your figure. (Look in Florinda's closet next time). But the wig is to die for:

Do blondes really have more fun? ( Outfit modeled by Alan Young. That's how he got the gig on "Mr. Ed." Of course...of course! )
