Top 5, Mabel (my greatgrandmother's name not that I ever knew her), Poppy, Emma (this one's tricky because we know too many Emma's, Heidi and Nancy but Joe has just told me it's Mabel and we did give him the deciding vote. However it will be subject to us seeing her again and Joe not changing his mind.

I'm glad it isn't Nancy, it would be too confusing here. I love the name Mabel! We shall see.....

If she's called Nancy I'd be happy because I know she'd share a name with a good and kind friend :D There won't be many Mabel's around. Molly the cat was Mabel for 2 weeks before I brought her home then Libby changed her mind. And of course Charlie the cat was Lola since we were sold 'her' as a girl, one quick name change later and all was well. Quite fitting we chose Lola when you think of the Kinks song.

Well, she would :D My great grandmother Mabel was an Irish gypsy with big hooped earrings and dark skin, she never made predictions though.

If only my Mum could remember, I even traced the family tree, her folks came from Ireland, one woman with lots of sons in the 1840s, my Mum was frightened of her and marvelled at all her gold jewellry. I do know her half brother accidentally shot dead his twin sister in 1909, I found that in the newspaper whilst her mother was living over the brush with a man she made their stepfather. The gun was in his junk shop, the kids were playing with it. I'll try to find out more for you.

My top three would be ...

1) Poppy
2) Mabel
3) Heidi

Oh my word! That's terrible!

It's odd the serious things you find out when you look in your family's history. I just found out last year that my great grandmother, who had four children in a row, died in childbirth, but not from natural causes. Apparently she didn't want the fifth child in as many years, felt overwhelmed and a woman told her to soak matches in water and drink the liquid, it would cause her to abort her child, but instead, she died a few hours later, leaving a stricken husband with four small kids under the age of six. It was never discussed in the family, but my first cousin, a history buff, found a death certificate recently and an old, careworn note to someone explaining the whole thing.

Weird isn't it? We're just this plain midwestern farm family. Such a tragic secret.

I don't know how I missed this thread a few days ago. That's such a tragedy what happened to your great grandmother but one could understand her despair. One of mine had a husband who would give her 3 months grace after the birth of a baby and then she was fair game again. She was pregnant every year but mercifully she had a few miscarriages amongst them and went through an early change. The span between her children was 19 years, the oldest being my granddad who in later years with his brothers had to pull his father off his mother when he was indulging in fisticuffs after the pub. We don't know we're born.

Oh Kingme, Libby will love you, she really wants Poppy as the name and I'm inclined that way too. We'll have to make up our minds soon or else the poor thing won't have a name.
