Gene Tierney was the hottest, no contest really. However, what I noticed about all these classic beauties is that the majority of them had personal problems and/or tragedies.

Gene Tierney: Battled with mental issues and depression
Natalie Wood: The controversy regarding Kirk Douglas + her unfortunate death.
Linda Darnell: Lots of personal problems that culminated with her death by fire.
Lana Turner: The whole Johnny Stompanato drama.
Elizabeth Taylor: Had a turbulent lifestyle.
Olivia de Havilland: Her long feud with Joan.
Lupe Vélez: Suicide as a result of an unwanted pregnancy.
Brigitte Bardot: Racist.
Carole Landis: Her mysterious death.
Marilyn Monroe: Personal problems and her mysterious death.
Veronica Lake: Mental illness and alcoholism.
Vivien Leigh: I've heard that she was bipolar.
Carole Lombard: Died too early in a plane crash.
Ingrid Bergman: Her affair with Rossellini.
Grace Kelly: Died too early in a car accident.
Rita Hayworth: Alcohol struggles.
Hedy Lamarr: Shoplifting.

It seems that being a good-looking actress in the old days was a curse more often than not. :(

Regarding Rita Hayworth--I thought that people attributed her behavior to alcoholism but it was actually the beginnings of Alzheimer's disease, not a drinking problem at all.

Also, everyone has tragedies, most of us are just lucky that they aren't played out in public.

Thank you Sandy for clearing that up and that's why I'm so sad that many people in Hollywood/Entertainment World did not understand what's Rita Hayworth problem was and that's why I dread watching any of her movies after 1965 Money (her 5th and Final Film with Glenn Ford) Trap. Even, John Wayne back in 1964 was very concerned about Rita Hayworth on the set of Circus World and that's why she stumbled on a disease that no one had a clue what to do back in 1960's.

Again, thanks Sandy!

Permit me to put in a late vote for a lovely lady who doesn’t seem to have been mentioned: Sophia Loren. She had class, even when the role (as was usually the case) required her to be “earthy.”

I first saw her in “Boy on a “Dolphin” at age 23 (both of us) and fell for her instantly. By coincidence I rewatched the film last week (first time in 50+ years), and fell in love all over again.

From IMDb, I just learned: “While filming Boy on a Dolphin (1957), Sophia was required to walk in a trench in order to give audiences the impression that her diminutive co-star, Alan Ladd, was taller than she.”

Bet she wasn’t the only trench-walker in his career.

In 1984, at age 50, she did a TV movie, “Aurora” (not even mentioned on IMDb) with her son, Edoardo, and Daniel J. Travanti. She was still as lovely, and as classy, as 27 years earlier.

Not mentioned?

The word "Beautiful" cannot exist without the word "Sophia".

On April 14, 2011, I posted:
And in the "Forget the 'Most Beautiful'...She's Just a Goddess" category: Sophia Loren.

I gather someone started this category right after your post, possibly as a result of it.

Good to know someone else sees her perfection.

You are most welcome, Erik. My mother suffers from dementia, and I always feel such compassion for Rita Hayworth and her family.

Sandy, I had a Mother that had the same problems as yours - she died 2 years ago and I understand what you're going through and its not an easy for me to share this but dementia/alzheimer's disease is one of those things that I had to take it in for stride.

Now, my Father is getting it too and he's two years older than my own Mother and we may have to put him in a nursing home sometimes in the next six months. I just wanted to let you know that and I wished someday this dreaded disease will eventually be conquered for good. I dealt with this for over a decade now and not an easy thing to do.

Thank you, Erik, for your kind words.

Dementia is a horrible, terrible disease. It's so difficult to watch the person that you love disappear, yet they are still here in body. I am so sorry that you went through it with your mother, and now with your father. Keep your chin up.
