Thanks for posting this link to a remarkable quartet who served their king and country well, Janet. The London Scottish Regiment must have been quite daring to have taken in (and fostered) such neophyte "theatricals"--I wonder if their officers were regular theater goers?

Interestingly, Basil Rathbone's Watson, played amusingly by Nigel Bruce, was also a veteran of the war in another regiment. As reported on the Baker Street Wikia, Nigel "served during WWI in France starting in 1914, but in 1915 he was shot multiple times in the leg, having eleven bullets in his left leg, and spent the rest of the war in a wheelchair. Ironically, the character he would come to play several years later, Watson, is known for being shot in the leg while in Afghanistan." Sadly, Bruce was relatively young at 58 when he died in 1953.
