Christy posted an image from Auntie Mame over on the FB page, and the response with quotes from that movie has been amazing. Thought it would be fun to start a thread here, taking one movie at a time, and see how many quotes we can remember. Auntie Mame is a great one to start, it has an amazing number of really good quotes

"I'm your Auntie Mame!"

"Are we all Lit??"

"Agnes! You DO have a chest!"
"Life is not the way it's supposed to be.. It's the way it is..
The way we cope with it, is what makes the difference." ~ Virginia Satir
""Most people pursue pleasure with such breathless haste that they hurry past it." ~ Soren Kierkegaard

I've been wondering where people had gone to of late; I suppose they're on Facebook.

Sounds like fun, knitwit45, but I've never seen Auntie Mame. Sorry.

Now if it were Rosemary's Baby I could give you a few good quotes. :D

Nancy, I recall that I started a Favorite Quotes thread years ago over on the TCM board and it was very popular. Needless to say I'm glad that you began another one.

PT. I'm just shocked that you never watched the wonderful "Auntie Mame"

A couple of my favorite quotes are:

"Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges!" The Treasure of the Sierra Madre

"Everything but the bloodhounds snappin' at her rear end.. ..." All About Eve

What a great idea! And the perfect film to start us off. A few of my favorites:

"Mr. Babcock, knowledge is power!"

"Oh, she’s not English darling. She’s from Pittsburg."
"She sounded English."
"Well, when you’re from Pittsburg, you have to do something."

"That’s a B, darling, the first letter of a seven-letter word that means your late father."

And, of course: "Why did I ever buy him those long pants!"

But my favorite, because so much meaning is squeezed into just three words: "Charmed, Lord Dudley."

The All About Eve quote was a good addition, and one of my favorites from one of my favorite movies. I think it’s the wittiest material ever written directly for the screen. Of course, everyone knows the “fasten your seatbelts” line, but my favorite, because of Bette’s magnificent reading, is:

"You can always put that award where your heart ought to be. "

Don't you wish you could have been the one to say that? Don't have to tell us who you'd like to say it to.

Now unless you want to.
AVATAR: Billy DeWolfe as Mrs. Murgatroid, “Blue Skies” (1946)

“My ancestors came over on the Mayflower.”
“You’re lucky. Now they have immigration laws."

Mae West, The Heat’s On” (1943)

Great idea for a thread, Nancy. I loved everyone's quotes so far.

The first quote that springs to mind is from one of the last gasps of the studio system, Airport (1970). Upon learning that the pregnant stewardess (Jacqueline Bisset) he has been canoodling with between flights, hotshot pilot Dean Martin is chagrined to hear that she will be going ahead with the birth. His crestfallen comment..."you mean...you have religious scruples?"

In Double Harness (1933), William Powell compares Ann Harding to the flower he has brought that is stored in the icebox as "coolly virginal yet exquisitely inviting.”

In Red Dust (1932), as Jean Harlow cleans up after a pet bird, "What you been eatin', cement?"

Helen Wright (Joan Crawford), explaining her past and her cynical present to Paul Boray (John Garfield) in Humoresque (1946):
"I was married twice before - once at 16, once at 21. One was a crybaby and the other was a caveman. Between the two of them I said goodbye to girlhood."

This site always slows down in the Summertime anyway. Not that much online action, period. I think that most people are trying to get outside more and have family stuff going on.

[Howard eats, while Dobbs and Curtin snooze]

Oh, man, Joe. You really know how to pick 'em, all the way down the line. I can just see Millie saying what she'd give for a sinkful of dishes. If only some of the dames in that cage could have heard her!

To me, the very best line is from the second Aliens where Ripley says with tons of anger, hate and imaginary venom dripping from her mouth: "Get away from her you _itch!"

And running a verrrry close second is Lauren Bacall's "just put your lips together and blow".

Both examples are said with a tangible chemical vigor: One in protection of a child, and the other of course, with extreme sensual overtones.

Have been thinking a lot about favorite quotes. I find that the best seem to be those where you can actually hear the actor speaking the lines in your head as you read them. I believe that is true of the quotes above. Here are some more. See if you, too, don’t “hear” them.

I am big. It’s the pictures that got small.

I coulda been a contender! I coulda been...somebody!

Hello, everybody. This is Mrs. Norman Maine.

What a dump!

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?

Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore.

Mother of Mercy, is this the end of Ricco?

Made it, Ma, top of the world!

It is a far, far better thing I do than I have ever done. It is a far, far better rest I go to than I have ever known.

Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

I want you to get up right now and go to the window, open it and stick your head out and yell, “I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take it any more!"

Mrs. Robinson, you’re trying to seduce me. Aren’t you?

And back to the source of this thread:

If I kept my hair “natural” the way you do, I’d be bald!

And, finally, one great classic managed to end with two great quotes in a row:

Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn!

Tara! Home! I’ll go home, and I’ll think of some way to get him back. After all, tomorrow is another day.
