Mildred Pierce was one of the definite hits of the festival, Jackie. But Beau Bridges and Eddie Muller had a great audience, too. As we passholders were waiting in line for the screening of Mildred Pierce, there seemed like much more excitement in the air than Thursday night's opening Gala of Funny Girl and the red carpet hou-ha. Passholders were much more excited to see Mildred Pierce and Ann Blyth, it seems, rather than being kept in the dark about who would actually introduce Funny Girl, which seemed a sort of an anti-climactic moment. Announcing Cher and one of William Wyler's daughters as special guests probably would have made it more traditionally energizing as an opening gala, but maybe the powers that be were afraid people would denigrate the opening because La Streisand wasn't there.

Blyth wore a lovely deep, peachy-pink hued floor length flowing gown, and was a perfect guest on Saturday night in the Egyptian. Again, like in her "Word of Mouth" interstitial, she reiterated her admiration for Joan Crawford. Crawford actively participated in Blyth's screen test for Mildred Pierce which was directed by Michael Curtiz, and Blyth claimed that Crawford was helpful, gracious, and patient, and they continued to be friends through the years . Blyth also discussed how she enjoyed making the film because of the support she received from Crawford. Blyth was divine, and an excellent "Classic Hollywood" attraction. I heard several passholders remark about her guest starring role on The Twilight Zone concerning a woman who is perpetually young and beautiful. And on Saturday night, Ann Blyth was stunning, both for her beauty, her aura of kindliness, and her symbolic representation of her peers who have passed on.

And during the screening, when it came to the moment when Mildred slaps Veda for blackmailing the family of her ex-husband out of $10,000, the audience was clapping and cheering, and hooting and hollering. Veda is just a gal audiences love to hate. Osborne, I believe brought up the point that it was marvelous how Blyth was not typecast in "bad girl" parts, and went on to sing in operettas like The Student Prince. But during her flashy sequined number where she sings "Billy McCoy," you could hear some in the audience sing along with her just like we were all in Wally's nightclub when Bert and Mildred show up for "dinner."

EVERY GIRL'S NIGHTMARE....A Chinese Doppelganger!

Post by Sue Sue Applegate »

Sue Sue and lovely Theresa Madere at the Vanity Fair party...
Image

I had so much fun meeting and enjoying the bubbly company of energetically adorable Butterscotchgreer(Theresa Madere) who's been posting on the TCM Message Boards since she was 16. Watching her film an interview with Ben Mankiewicz (who gave her a little kiss "goodbye" at the end of her interview, BTW), was so much fun. The entire interview, with special video Theresa filmed at home in Texas, can be viewed on the video gallery here: http://filmfestival.tcm.com/about/video-gallery.php
(Theresa's interview is the last one entered for 4/26.)

But shortly after I had met Ann Blyth as I entered Grauman's Chinese Theatre, I met a lady who completely shocked me. She was wearing the exact same satin floor-length Chinese dress I was wearing!

"How dare you!" I shouted.
But she just stared blankly at me, and said not a word. I was incensed. The very idea!

Image

Evidently, she had been there for quite a while. Hence the enigmatic, unconcerned expression.

Traditionally, there had been three wax dummies wearing authentic costumes from Cathay, China, who surrounded a wax figure of Rhonda Fleming seated in the chair pictured above.

Evidently, Rhonda's wax figure from the Hollywood Wax Museum was featured because she had been married to Ted Mann, a former owner of the theater. Movie stars, writers, directors, and producers considered it good luck to come and rub the shoulder of one of the three female Chinese figures who had traditionally graced the West Wing of the lobby at Grauman's Chinese Theatre, now the TCL Chinese Theatre, which is currently being renovated. The shoulders of the figures would be "rubbed for good luck" before embarking on a new venture or before a premiere. It is one of these traditional wax figures that is encased in glass in the lobby!

So I kept telling that story while I was wearing that dress, and then I would wiggle one of my shoulders!

(Lynn is at the ready with all updates concerning the TCL "facelift" which will affect the future of the historic entertainment venue.)

Was it Albert Einstein who said "Coincidence is God's way of remaining anonymous...."?

I was stunned and stutteringly speechless, so you know how it must have affected me...

The dresses were made of the exact same material, and the "frogs," the silk clasps at the neck and bodice, were also
exactly the same color and style.

Incredible! Maybe it's fate trying to tell you that you should go to Hollywood! Or buy more oriental clothing.

It was certainly an unexpected coincidence!

A couple of folks walked by and noticed it, too. When I would tell the story all night long, people would give me the
"How weird" look. It was just too funny!

Hi there Christy. I enjoyed reading...and re-living the "MILDRED PIERCE" screening. That was truly MY highlight of the festival. To see Crawford bigger than life up there on that screen; to see how really attractive she was...and the broaches she wore was to die for. And I say, on the big BIG screen, you cannot hide poor acting. Joan Crawford did an excellent job as Mildred Pierce. Also, seeing Ann Blyth talk of her experience...to have one of the actual stars there before us. Great!

Oooh, and I see you posted a foto with my new "Sammykins," your friend Sam. I loved him. I'll share these shots of him and me:

No matter HOW early I got on line, Sam was never far behind.

Love these photos! Thank you so much for posting them.

I guess I did have some hats this festival. Just have more fun in hats and boots and silks and satins and baubles and bangles...

I adored seeing Mildred Pierce on the big screen. I am always amazed at Crawford's and Blyth's performance in this one, and bowled over by how much I miss on the little screen. I also think Jack Carson did an excellent job as Wally, and seeing those adorable Eve Arden outfits, watching her say her line, and stare for a reaction is always one of my favorite parts.

The most adorable outfit? Arden's Chinese-themed jacked and the striped velveteen at the party.

Hugs and gratitude for the images, as always, Exalted Chronicler of the Fun!
