2014 TCM Classic Film Festival

Post by pvitari »

I guess it will be two years in a row I'm not going to the TCM festival. They just announced the dates -- April 10-13, 2014. I called the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, and a nice man was just about to book my room when the phone went dead. I called back and this time a lady told me there were no rooms available and no waiting list. They had a waiting list last year, I told her, but she insisted there was no waiting list. The other hotel right there, the Renaissance, which I think has been renamed the Loew's Hollywood, is also sold out. Some other hotel on the boulevard had rooms starting at $459 -- way beyond my budget.

So unless some poor soul takes pity on me and agrees to share their hotel room with me, I'm you know what out of luck.

I now see the only way to get a room for 2015 is to book all the weekends in April a year ahead, and then just cancel the ones that turn out not to be the dates for the festival.

Well, I booked a room at a hotel that is several blocks up Highland Avenue but I'm still highly p*****d that I'll be far from the action and that my phone call went dead just as I was about to book a room at the Roosevelt.

So again if anyone wants to share a room (and expenses) at the Roosevelt, I'm your girl. I'll barely be there, anyway -- except for a few hours of sleep in the middle of the night, I'll be off watching a movie.

Yes, I realize that the problems of this one little person don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. Especially this crazy world where millions of people are looking for food and shelter, not luxury hotel rooms.

Paula, check the comments on the Going To TCM FESTIVAL facebook page. Several venues are discussed, and some sound closer (and maybe cheaper) than the one you named.

There was some major miscommunication between the HRH and TCM Fesival management. But I hope there is more regularity concerning the pricing of the rooms at the HRH because the Roosevelt gave many different prices to festival goers I've visited with in the past.

I might have discussed prices with 10-12 people at each festival, practically every one of them said they were paying a different price than me, so maybe TCM will rein in the wild horses at the Roosevelt corral.

I would share but I already have my roomie lined up.

Good news! I called back this morning and was able to book a room. PHEW.

My blood pressure is returning to normal. :) Sue Sue, about the prices -- on the first phone call last night, the one that got cut off, the guy quoted me a great price. That is, great for the Roosevelt. But when I booked the room this morning, I got an entirely different price and far more expensive. So PHEW and ARRRGHHH.

They only have a block of rooms for the festival guests, and then they jack up the prices. Last I heard they only had cabana rooms at like $415-$500 a room.
A pretty wacky setup. But maybe after all these snafus, TCM might try to have a tighter rein on HRH procedures and price gouging once the block of rooms is reserved.

The first year, we had all the stuff removed from the bar so we could put all our things in the fridge, and they charged me almost $300 for all that. It took a little over a month to have the money returned to my checking account.
(It was not on my final bill, and they waited until I was miles and states away to dump on me. They are a fairly clever, slick bunch.)

Their valet service is always top notch, and I believe they had some unscrupulous employees at the desk and the bar there who have been dismissed since my difficulties as I haven't seen any of them. Some other passholders had been charged room service and bar bills that they didn't create, either.

The reservations clerks were very helpful this year, but I had kept calling and calling, and tried to have my reservations in ASAP.

Sorry Paula. But I am glad I will get to see you there. :-)

Yup, this year I'm coming! Maybe they'll even run another Ben Johnson movie. ;) I hear they're doing a Wild Bunch restoration so maybe it will show up this year. ;)

I was going to say if I win the lottery you might see me there, but then...
