HILARIOUS LADIES!!!

My father saw "TARZAN'S NEW YORK ADVENTURE" as a kid, and said kids were screaming their heads off at the RKO Alhambra, when Tarzan dove off the Brooklyn Bridge!! I've seen the movie as a kid ( on tv ) and it's really the most impressive ( non-CGI ) human stunt I have ever seen.

In the 1960s, Johnny Weismuller was the official greeter at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. My mother, who was a showroom waitress at Caesars, had the opportunity to meet Weismuller. She came home and told us what a nice guy he was and still quite the looker (my mom always appreciates a good looking man). Somewhere in her treasure trove of kitsch, she has an autograph of Weismuller, that is if my idiot brother hasn't hocked it for some Jim Beam and smokes.

There's only one reason to drink whiskey, and it has nothing to do with flavor! TARZAN'S NEW YORK ADVENTURE is the most downright, high flying, crowd roaring fun movie of the series. The first entry may be more literate. The one where they find Boy, more touching. But this thrilling "fish out of water" story is irresistible. I love the perfectly practical challenge of authority, the subjective view of a different kind of jungle. And that bridge scene. Holy Cow!

Excellent query, Red. I kind of doubt they would risk the Tarzan franchise by employing Weissmuller, but I would love to know the answer to that! If we can't find it anywhere, I will contact Denny Miller. He is a treasure trove of Tarzan trivia, facts, and filmdom info. And I wholeheartedly agree about the "New York" adventure's appeal. It is such an entertaining challenge and change from the other franchise films.

Sometimes it is nice just to let the stream of consciousness take over....like the time when I ran into Eva Gabor at the Battlestein's in Houston when she was pitching her wigs and my mother just wanted to hear what she had to say and then I told her that Eva was busy selling her wigs and that she didn't have time to socialize with us plebeians and she said that she didn't know what a plebeian was and how come I was using that word and she didn't think it was something good, she said that she wanted to talk to her about Zsa Zsa and Green Acres, and how come she didn't stay with Hilton, and I told her it was Zsa Zsa who married a Hilton, and then she said that some guy was filming it all for the local ABC station and what if they saw me at school 'cuz you know I was playing hooky and I said how can I get in trouble when I had a doctor's appointment and you're going to write a note, right?...

Don't forget about the Edgar Rice Burroughs/Tarzan stamp coming on August 17 to a post office near you! One of our July guests, Denny Miller, will be in attendance at the official ceremony of the USPS in Tarzana. He is the oldest living actor to have portrayed Tarzan!

As for the bridge stunt, there's a story of another Tarzan dive in which the jumper was killed. Angel Garcia was the gentleman's name, so I'm told. I don't know if that came before or after "New York Adventure." It would be interesting if it turned out to be the same person.

Red, I found a bit of info about the famous dive off of the Brooklyn Bridge in Tarzan's New York Adventure from the TCM info page for Summer Under The Stars, by Violet LeVoit:


Still, Weissmuller was in good enough shape to do many of his own stunts (including Tarzan's city rooftop escape and the climactic clamber up the Brooklyn Bridge) but he often generously turned stunt work over to his longtime Tarzan double Paul Stader so his pal could earn a "bump" (a bonus for completed stunts, equal to half his daily rate). While the real Brooklyn Bridge makes an appearance in this final scene, credit must also be given to the magnificent trompe l'oeil matte paintings mocking up the New York skyline. They were created by MGM special effects painter Warren Newcombe, whose work is most famously seen in The Wizard of Oz (1939).
