Shirley provided the first major ovation of the evening, and the first lovely "Ahhhh" moment.

I was disappointed that the Oscar memorial didn't include Harry Carey, Jr., Larry Hagman, Ann Rutherford, Alex Karras, and Andy Griffith. There were a few others, but I can't remember them. Check on the "Gone But Not Forgotten" Obit thread.

The seamless moment occurred when Marvin Hamlisch's photo appeared and the theme music from The Way We Were swelled to the heights as Barbra Streisand appeared in her lovely Donna Karan outfit. That was my first tear-filled moment, because I was a fan of Hamlisch as I had played and practiced several of his tunes in my youth.

Feaito, the "bosom buddies" number was a little crass, and there were several high-profile jokes at the personal expense of others. I always miss Johnny Carson, the master emcee at the Oscars, and Billy Crystal. I always felt Bob Hope was good, but Johnny smoothed all the rough edges on a live broadcast like "The Oscars." The newer, hipper, slicked down, off the top "formerly known as the artist," the Academy Awards.

SueSue, you made me laugh out loud ( ) and sob uncontrollably at the same time. ( ) BRILLIANT!!

Folks, did you ever have a friend who was involved in a destructive relationship? She ( or he ) is not happy with her partner. She cries and whines and boohoo about him to you...for the umpteenth time. You listen and listen and listen. You're understanding. You're on her side. You offer her some good, solid advice. Advice that will help her esteem. She deserves better. She needs a better boyfriend. She doesn't deserve to be treated like this.

And then she does the same thing again and again and again.

...And again.

You like your friend. And she likes you. But she will never take your advice. All you can do now is listen and just watch the train wreck.

I'm watching the train wreck.

And you know the most galling thing about it all...at The Oscars? Some of the music intros were from classic films. And then some presenter opened up their yap, and you knew you were in Hell again.

I just loved Shirley Bassey! Oh my gosh, she blew the roof off! The other affecting moment for me was the number from Les Mis, where people REALLY SANG on stage and showed the amateurs how it's actually done. Jane Fonda and Barbara both looked fantastic, and I did like the way they did the obituaries section, though they left out so many people. I liked the slow fades in it.

Jennifer Lawrence was so gracious, and even falling down looked more graceful than most of the people there. That dress must have had the best hydraulics ever, not to fall off at that moment! My favorite gown was Octavia Spencer's.

Daniel Day Lewis was hilarious.

Couldn't agree more with you Maven, it was like Rob Lowe all over again.

Shirley Bassey pulled that last note out of her soul. Streisand - legendary. Adele & "SKYFALL" - dark melancholic exquisite.

Reese Witherspoon's cobalt blue dress, Hallie Berry's striped form fitting gown - she's a goddess; Jacqueline Durran - winner of Costume Design for "Anna Karenina" looked fantastic. Statuesque Charlize Theron with the short hair cut, stunning. So handsome George Clooney with his salt 'n pepper beard, and that tux that fit perfectly. ( IS he the only man who knows how to tie a tux's bow-tie? ) The James Bond montage made my heart break. 50 years...sigh!! More-more-more. The Memoriam I didn't like. Jennifer Lawrence...we will hear from her waaay into the future; committed / talented. "Les Miserables" made me miserable. Don't like it. At all. Quentin shouldn't speak, but I enjoy his films including "Django Unchained." Happy for Christophe Waltz, Anne Hathaway makes me ill. Jane Fonda & Michael Douglas striding out there was GREAT - should have capped off the show with them.

I guess "The Oscars" are my (( )) favorite waste of time.

For anyone not sated with "The Oscars" 50 Years of Bond tribute, check out what Kees van Dijkhuizen, Jr. compiled:
http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/201 ... video.html

I really enjoyed it, and I feel it was a much more thorough job of highlighting all the different incarnations.

A lonely whistle pierces the silence of the night as whirring steel grips tracks leading from Chicago to LA...
Image
A classic 1952 film noir directed by Richard Fleischer with only a budget of $188,000...
Image
A mobster's wife decides to testify against her husband. "I like my bacon crisp and lots of butter on my toast."
Image
FASHION ALERT: BLACK PEIGNOIR=MOB MOLL

Detective Sargent Walter Brown, played by Charles McGraw, must protect her.
Image
But the mob is on their trail. "Point her out and turn the other way."

Image
"When are you going to get it through your square head that this is big business?"

Two women, one detective, the ruthless mob flunkies, a train rushing through the night to a scheduled destination and an uncertain conclusion...Image
Houston native Jaqueline White, who portrayed Ann Sinclair, will join possible host Eddie Muller as they introduce The Narrow Margin. White also appeared in such gems as Crossfire and Thirty Second Over Tokyo. Alan K.Rode crafted Charles McGraw, Film Noir Tough Guy.

I've never seen this film, but from what I've read here at the SSO, it's a wonderful Marie WIndsor vehicle, and I can't wait to experience it on the "big" screen at the TCMFF 2013.

It was on this afternoon!
FASHION ALERT: BLACK PEIGNOIR=MOB MOLL
Didn't we have a thread somewhere on WHAT I LEARNED FROM CLASSIC FILM? I've been thinking about this subject a lot in the last few days and your black peignoir line is yet another I can add to the ever growing list of things I learned from classic movies.

I love this movie and its one of my favorite film noir ... and Marie Windsor makes it's special ...

And, the Black Peignoir that she wore is one of the classier one ever worn by a dame like her!

Suex2,

Do you remember when Classic passes sold out last year?

I can't locate the post, but I think it was about three to four weeks before the festival started.

Just a short note about this year's schedule: if last year might be an indicator of this year's planning period, we received our TCMFF 2012 Final Schedule 14 days before the festival.

BTW, Don't you all just adore that photo of Marie Windsor that Cinemaven posted? It's so lovely, and that peignoir is classy.

UPDATE:
Image
Mel Brooks is slated to talk about his comedy The Twelve Chairs (1970). Carl Reiner, Mickey Rooney, Jonathan Winters, Marvin Kaplan and Barrie Chase will reunite to celebrate the 50th anniversary screening of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963), which will be presented in 70mm at Arclight's Cinerama Dome.
Image
Polly Bergen will attend a screening of J. Lee Thompson's Cape Fear (1962), while Coleen Gray is set to appear at a screening of Stanley Kubrick's The Killing (1956). Theodore Bikel will be on hand for a presentation of The African Queen (1951). And Norman Lloyd will chat about his long professional association with Alfred Hitchcock at a screening of the director's delightfully droll thriller The Lady Vanishes (1938). In addition, the festival's tribute to Max Von Sydow will now include a newly added screening of Three Days of the Condor (1975), along with the previously announced screening of Ingmar Bergman's classic The Seventh Seal (1957).
Image
Also slated for the festival, producer Stanley Rubin will talk about his experience making the colorful western River of No Return (1954), directed by Otto Preminger. Clara Bow biographer David Stenn will introduce the previously announced silent classic It (1927), featuring a live performance of the score conducted by its composer, Carl Davis. MoMA's Katie Trainor will present the rarely screened romance I Am Suzanne! (1933). And director Nicholas Ray's widow, Susan Ray, will talk about her late husband's work at a screening of the groundbreaking crime-drama They Live by Night (1949).
