Tonight, I spent the evening at Rydell High with Eve Arden, Sid Caesar, Dodi Goodman, Joan Blondell, Olivia Newton-John, John Travolta, Stockard Channing, and more. The Turner Classic Movies / Fathom Events screening of Grease was so much fun! When Ben Mankiewicz came on the screen, the audience clapped and screamed. The place was packed with a very enthusiastic audience.

Get ready, podner! Those "Trailblazing Women" are coming round the bend in October!
Writer Cari Beauchamp begins the fun October 1!

I was privileged to chat with one of my TCM Film Festival friends, Cari Beauchamp, this morning about her upcoming hosting experience for this ground-breaking month of Women Film Pioneers, and she is excited about all the movies that TCM has lined up on the schedule.

Here's an excerpt from her overview for the series on TCM in October:

"Women Behind the Camera
by Cari Beauchamp

"Several months ago, Vanity Fair ran an article claiming Ida Lupino was the first woman director. That is an oft-repeated mistake for there were dozens of women who preceded her in that role, but most have been erased from history. TCM is doing their part to correct those misconceptions and set the record straight by creating a month-long festival in October entitled “Trailblazing Women: Behind the Movies, Ahead of Their Time.”

In point of fact, Alice Guy was the first woman director, and one of the very first film directors period. In 1895, she was the secretary to camera maker Léon Gaumont and together in Paris they attended the first ever public screening of a movie, Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory. Inspired, Alice asked if she could try her hand at making films and Gaumant agreed, as long as her clerical duties didn’t suffer. Her after-hours creations became the first narrative films and they were so successful she was made the head of Gaumont’s newly formed production company in 1897. Over the next decade she directed more than 1000 short films. When she moved to America in 1910 with her husband, the cameraman Herbert Blaché, she formed Solax in Fort Lee, New Jersey. In spite of having two children, she kept pace with the output of D.W. Griffith, who was directing his films nearby in lower Manhattan."

THOSE TRAILBLAZING WOMEN----TONIGHT!Image
Director Julie Dash visits with Host Illeana Douglas for tonight's installment of Trailblazing Women in Film.
Here's her bio from the Trailblazing Women website:
"Twenty-four years ago, filmmaker Julie Dash broke through racial and gender boundaries with her Sundance award-winning film (Best Cinematography) Daughters of the Dust, and she became the first African American woman to have a wide theatrical release of her feature film. In 2004, The Library of Congress placed Daughters of the Dust in the National Film Registry where it joins a select group of American films preserved and protected as national treasures; Dash is the only African American woman with a feature film that has been inducted into the National Film Registry.

Julie Dash was a Visiting Assistant Professor at the College of Charleston, in the department of African American Studies, and with the Avery Research Center for African American Studies; in 2013 she held the Bob Allison Chair in Media at Wayne State University. Dash has written and directed for CBS, BET, ENCORE STARZ, SHOWTIME, MTV Movies and HBO, directing, the NAACP Image Award winning, Emmy and DGA nominated, The Rosa Parks Story, Incognito, Funny Valentines, Love Song, and Subway Stories: Tales From the Underground . Her work as a film director includes theme park, Disney’s Imagineering, and museum design Brothers of the Borderland for The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center Museum. Her work includes music videos, documentary, PSA’s, industrial documentary films, and commercial spots for fortune 500 brands, i.e., Coca Cola and GMC. Dash has a novel published by Dutton books; and The Making of Daughters of The Dust, published by The New Press.

Recent retrospectives of her narrative film work have been held in Beijing and Hong Kong University, China; Charleston, SC, Creteil, France; Taipei, Taiwan; and Philadelphia, PA. Dash also served as chair of the International Jury at the Kerala International Film Festival, India.

Julie Dash is currently in production on a feature length documentary about Vertamae Smart Grosvenor, a world-renowned author, performer, and chef from rural South Carolina who has led a remarkably unique and complex life. The film is based upon Grosvenor’s bestselling work, Vibration Cooking: or the Travel Notes of a Geechee Girl. Ms. Dash earned her MFA in Film & Television production at UCLA; received her BA in Film Production from CCNY, and she was a Producing and Writing Conservatory Fellow at the American Film Institute’s Center for Advanced Film Studies. When not working on her projects Ms. Dash is a frequent lecturer at many of the leading Universities in the United States."

Films screening tonight include Dash's seminal work, "Daughters of the Dust" (1991) at 9:45 p.m. (ET).

It's update time from the home office in Atlanta:

This year's main theme is MOVING PICTURES—the ones that bring us to tears, rouse us to action, inspire us, even project us to a higher plane. In the heart of historic Hollywood we'll gather to share the big-time emotions of big screen stories, from coming-of-age pictures to terminal tearjerkers, from powerful sports dramas we feel in our bones to religious epics that elevate our spirits. These are the films that set our love of cinema in motion.

To kick off our celebration we're thrilled to announce the first additions to the 2016 Festival line up:

HORSE FEATHERS (1932) World Premiere Restoration
The Marx Bros. bring their manic and surrealistic style of comedy to college football and academia when College president Groucho enlists Chico and Harpo to help his team beat a rival in one of the funniest football games in movie history, shown in a new restoration presented in collaboration with Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

SHANGHAI EXPRESS (1932) World Premiere Restoration
The pairing of director Josef von Sternberg and actress Marlene Dietrich turns this melodramatic tale of bandits and ladies of easy virtue into one of the most exotic experiences in film history, shown in a new restoration presented in collaboration with Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

THE SONG OF BERNADETTE (1943)
Jennifer Jones gives a luminous (and Oscar-winning) performance as Bernadette Soubirous, the real-life peasant girl whose visions of the Virgin Mary inspired the townspeople of Lourdes in the 19th-century.

A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN (1945)
Elia Kazan made a spectacular film-directing debut with this story of an immigrant Irish family's struggle to make it in the new world. The film also brought Oscars to James Dunn as the family's hard-drinking father and Peggy Ann Garner as his daughter.

IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE (1946)
This heartwarming tale and perennial fan favorite (celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2016) stars James Stewart as George Bailey, a small-town man who learns just how important a single life can be thanks to the help of an angel named Clarence (Henry Travers).

THE KING AND I (1956)
60th anniversary presentation of the lavish film adaptation of the Broadway hit starring Deborah Kerr as an English governess who brings modern ways to 19th century Siam, and falls in love with its king (Yul Brynner) in the process.

Film Festival 101 answers questions concerning the film festival and last year's version is still posted: http://2015.filmfestival.tcm.com/attend/festival-101/
