There is the distinct feeling of a barrel being scraped. Time for them to look book and realize that there are plenty of well-known films out there still waiting to be preserved.

I wouldn't call it "bottom scraping", necessarily, only that they're struggling to find diverse films to include.

Most of the ones I hadn't heard of (many of them shorts, or documentaries, or both) deal with issues of race, gender, sexism, and cultural topics. I'd also add that preserving these rarer films maybe fits more with the original preservation mission of the Registry, as the more well-known films, like Iron Man aren't in much trouble of fading into oblivion.

The omissions you mention were glaring to me, as well. They usually made up the bulk of each year's lists.
