Any number of memorable romantic duos spring to mind and obviously there are too many to list. Let me just go with the first five that came to mind. I don't know why they headed the list but here they are:

1. Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh in GWTW
2. Leslie Howard and Olivia DeHavilland in GWTW
3. Clark Gable and Myrna Loy in Test Pilot
4. Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert in It Happened One Night
5. Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca

One romantic couple that was left out was Tyrone Power and Gene Tierney. Their films Son of Fury and The Razor's Edge are fantastic! Some people believe they were the most beautiful coupe ever to be paired. Their chemistry on screen was undeniable, and their physical presence was breathtaking!

The fact that they only made two films together does not detract from their status as a romantic couple. I wish they had done more together, and I can't figure why Fox didn't pair them more often. Their movies were not comedies, but there is no thread for "regular" romantic duos, so I thought I would just stick them in here. And, they would have been marvelous in a comedy together!

How 'bout Coop & 'Trish Neal in Fountainhead?

Hmmmm, odd choice, that, even for me . .

Could it be because the oft-maligned Fountainhead is my All Time Fave Classic Movie?
Or could it be because Coop & the debutante Miss Neal were in amore off the screen at the same time, to the extent that her folks had her kidnapped away to the homes of distant relatives, immediately after the shooting wrapped? (Loretta Young had been disgraceful enough for U.S. Catholics, no way was their little girl gonna make the Pope weep!)
Or maybe it was the "architecture" that the young leading lady displayed in her clavicle-baring gown during the high-rise cocktail party scene . . 30 years later, Hal Linden could be heard musing romantic over it on Barney Miller, no less . .
Hmmmm . . . only thing I'm sure of . . is it's time for a Guinness . .

Claudette Colbert and Joel in "Palm Beach Story"
Claudette and Fred MacMurray in many films, especially in "No Time For Love"
Fred and Carole in "Hands Across The Table", "True Confession", "The Princess Comes Across" and "Swing High, Swing Low"
Fred and Madeleine Carroll in "Honeymoon in Bali" and other films

I once said that Fred Macmurray would make a great star of the month on TCM and people thought I was crazy. But just look at that list! And you could add "Double Indemnity" and "The Lady is Willing" and "Alice Adams" and "Take a Letter Darling" and "Gilded Lily" and I could go on and on.

^ I agree. I think he is vastly underrated....and I'm not even sure why.

Maybe it's because so many people connect him to kids movies and MY THREE SONS. I don't know....but if you look at some of his serious movie work, he is extraordinary. Not only in the romantic comedies with Claudette Colbert, but in more dramatic roles such as DOUBLE INDEMNITY and DIVE BOMBER.

You're probably right. Until I started getting into old movies, I'd only seen him in "My Three Sons" and those Disney movies. I had no idea he had made so many great films. He was one of those multi-purpose leading men types and very versatile, I think.

I'm going to have to go with Rock Hudson & Doris Day. Their trilogy of films were hilarious and their chemistry...well, I think they were soulmates on screen!

Well I adore all the Katharine Hepburn-Cary Grant pairings.

I love Joel McCrea and Veronica Lake in Sullivan's Travels, ditto McCrea and Colbert in The Palm Beach Story.

Fredric March and Myrna Loy are great together in The Best Years of Our Lives and of course Myrna and William Powell are always good together.
