Both noirs were directed by Fritz lang and star Eddie G, Joan Bennett, and Dan Duryea. Which do you prefer & why. ALERT - Negative comments regarding MsJoan will be mean I will not like you

Scarlet Street is more entertaining to me, but I like Joan's character more in Woman in the Window.

I like both films, too. They are both exceptional and, in a broad sense too similar to differentiate for many. But given the choice I would definitely go with SCARLET STREET. I don't think there's a more somber reflection on the nature of fate ever committed to film. WOMAN IN THE WINDOW in many ways (especially its less than completely satisfying conclusion) seems to be little more than a warm-up for SCARLET STREET.
I think it's important to remember, however, that neither the beautiful Joan Bennett nor the redoubtable Edward G. Robinson are the stars of these films. Fritz Lang is.

Are you sure it's not the woman in Joan that you prefer?

Another vote for SCARLET STREET. As fine as THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW is, the ending seriously disappoints. IMO, that kind of ending never provides emotional satisfaction.

I'll tell you this...in that screen cap of Anne Revere in Chapter 4 of 10, she looks wonderfully beautifully stern.

Since IMO the story actually "ends" satisfactorily, the tacked-on bit that closes out the film (and, I imagine, satisfied the censors by underscoring that the whole thing is a cautionary tale) doesn't really bother me.

While I think Woman is one of Lang's most enjoyable films, Scarlet Street is certainly the better of the two, although I still believe Scarlet Street to be undervalued even today. I often read writers denigrate it in favor of Renoir's La Chienne, but I think it's possible to keep one's standing as an elite film critic and still appreciate both.
