your favorite romantic movies

Postby charliechaplinfan » Sun Dec 05, 2010 4:20 pm

It's turned very cold here, the kind of weather that means you don't venture out unless you absolutely have to, perfect for a romantic movie. Any suggestions, these are some of my favorites but I'd love to discover others

Brief Encounter
Summertime
Casablanca
Seventh Heaven
Lucky Star
A Farewell To Arms
History is Made At Night
Love Affair
An Affair to Remember
Algiers
Now Voyager
Letter From An Unknown Woman
Gigi
The Quiet Man
Wild River
Statione Termini
On The Waterfront
Mayerling
Hold Back The Dawn
The Constant Nymph

Oh yes, it's brilliant, thanks Klondike, that's the problem with making lists I leave treasures off them. That's why I'm glad I've got everyone here.

I forgot

Alison, you've listed most of my favorites, but I'd add
Random Harvest (I can hear the groans now, but I absolutely LOVE this movie)
Charade (1963)
A Woman of Affairs (1928)
A Walk in the Clouds (1995)
Lili (1953)
Of course, you must end with Hold Back the Dawn. Once you've watched that one, all others pale in the pure Romance Department :D

Zoo In Budapest too.

I think the romantic movies I like the best are the ones that reaffirm my believe in love at first sight and soulmates.

Did I add Shadowlands, my husband can't stand it but I love it.

Random Harvest, I can see why.

Yes, I'll second that nomination!
Besides being a really unusual twist on the "newlywed" scenario, it's a visually rich & enticing film, one set in the morning-fresh early post-war days of coastal California.
Among the many scenes that stand out, one of the most magnificent is when the vineyard workers rush about the fields on a chill evening, using canvas "wings" to fan the heat from smoldering smudgepots up to the grapes at risk of frost-kill; it almost evokes the hushed, childlike awe with which we've all watched that pioneer Vitascope footage of the dancing "butterfly fairies"!
I'm also always moved by the way the conflicted young "couple" begin to redefine the boundaries of their desires by watching & hearing the fullness of the love they witness still in bloom between her grandparents.
And speaking of "groans", let me hear none about Surfer-Boy Keanu Reeves in the male lead herein; this role really pushed the envelope for him - I felt he rose to the challenge admirably, and really grew as a performer.
But Hey, that, and a buck, will buy you coffee in most diners in Vermont, so what do I know?

K, the only thing I would argue about "Clouds" is that the workers don't rush, but move slowly, almost as in a dream. That scene is truly beautiful. (Coffee is still $0.75 in the diners and cafes around here...)

Reading Salanger's Catcher in the Rye at an early age made it impossible for me to enjoy RH in any kind of serious context.

Several of my favorites have been mentioned, but here are some others I
really respond to:

Holiday Affair
The Tamarind Seed
Roman Holiday
Out of Africa
Portrait of Jennie
Somewhere in Time
Love is a Many Splendored Thing
The World of Suzie Wong
Un Homme et Une Femme
Arch of Triumph

And I know it's crazy, but I personally find these westerns to be romantic:
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Rio Grande
The Proud Rebel
Hondo
Angel and the Bad Man
The Wonderful Country

Not crazy at all! We all respond to different stimuli, that's what makes the world go round, doesn't it? I think Trooper Hook and Wagon Master are both very romantic movies.
