I don't think any actor fit the gangster image more effectively than Bruce Gordon. Robert Stack was right when he said that Gordon as Frank Nitti was a "real crook", in that he stole every scene in which he appeared on "The Untouchables".
Despite the image, however, in real life Bruce was an A-1 guy!

I know he played an evil character as Frank Nitti--but Bruce Gordon always made me smile. His Nitti had more bluster and brawn than brains, and the actor managed to make him so likable, despite his nefarious deeds. Besides, the way he played him, Nitti enjoyed being a bad dude far more than Elliot Ness ever did being morallyuptight upright.Western Guy wrote:I don't think any actor fit the gangster image more effectively than Bruce Gordon. I always thought that Gordon and Anthony Caruso should have played brothers.
Don't tell me you knew Bruce Gordon, too, Stone!!?Western Guy wrote:Despite the image, however, in real life Bruce was an A-1 guy!

Maximilian Schell, as he portrayed Hamlet for West German television, 1960, and attending an opera ball in Dresden, 2007.

Re: *CANDIDS*
Never personally met Bruce Gordon, Moira. But I did have a lengthy telephone conversation with him when I was writing my Robert Stack tribute. It was kinda funny. Bruce said he really couldn't tell me much about Stack since theirs was really just a working relationship, but he began telling me other neat stories about his career, including working with Boris Karloff in "Arsenic and Old Lace", filming "Tower of London" with Vincent Price and playing the baddie in "Curse of the Undead". He also appeared in the film "Rider on a Dead Horse", which co-starred probably my best friend in show biz, Kevin Hagen and directed by another guy I interviewed, Herbert L. Strock. God, I feel like I name drop too much -- but this is the site for it, I reckon.
And you're so right also, Moira, on two counts: the resemblance between Gordon and Anthony Caruso (darn rights they shoulda done a project where they played brothers), and even though Gordon's Frank Nitti was as evil as they come, Bruce somehow managed to make the character likeable -- and that's gotta be a tough chore for an actor. Perfect summation: More bluster than brains. All of his schemes eventually got foiled.
PT: Wonderful images of the great Maximilian Schell.

Re: *CANDIDS*
Hi,
Very sad to hear that Maximilian Schell has died.
I met him once at the '63 Oscars in Joan Crawford's dressing room (I was her bartender). I spoke a little German to him, as I had attended Heidelberg University but I don't think he thought much of my bad pronounciation or grammar. Anyway, we laughed a little.
Then, he was off to present the Best Actress Oscar - not to Bette Davis but to Anne Bancroft and received by Joan - I think you all know that episode in Hollywood fokelore!!!
A nice guy.
