I like many think Duke's leading lady was Maureen O'Hara, but after that I'd say Claire Trevor.
IMO as well as being a truly great western, Stagecoach is also one of the great love stories, about two social undesirables, a escaped con and a dancehall girl, who fall in love and together find respectabilty on his far off ranch.
Trevor makes a fetching tomboy in Colonial western The First Rebel (British title) as Yanks Wayne and others combat George Sanders brutal British Officer and his men.
In Dark Command, Trevor falls for uneducated sherif Wayne and rejects intellectial school-master Walter Pidgeon, who also ran for sherif and as a result of losing both the job he wanted and his girl turns to a life of an outlaw.

They also did a picture called "Allegheny Uprising." It is set in Revolutionary War era USA. Claire spends most of her time fawning over Wayne like a school girl. Wayne has more important things to do but they end up together and make a very nice couple.
