next may the winterset birthplace will be holding a grand opening of their JW museum...it would be fun if several of us JW fan "ramblers" could all meet up there! brian downes who runs it is a sweetheart.

I was reading Roger Moore's new memoir, "One Lucky B*stard: Tales From Tinseltown" which is not half as engaging as his first volume. "My Word is My Bond" but an okay read. Several stories made me laugh (even the ones I had heard before), but the best one concerned his first encounter with two living legends at a charity event organized by a famous singer in Los Angeles in the mid-fifties. A relatively unknown actor at the time, Moore attended at his studio's request, only to find himself watching the diminutive Frank Sinatra and none other than the very large John Wayne roaring at each other, nearly coming to blows in the aisle of the hotel ballroom.

The reason?

Some generous soul had donated $2k to the charity to have Gordon MacRae sing. Hearing that gauntlet thrown down, Wayne piped up immediately and offered $4 grand to have MacCrae refrain from singing! I never heard that John Wayne had exacting musical standards, but apparently we know of one canary he didn't care for. Out of loyalty to a fellow singer or or perhaps just for the sake of argument, Sinatra was outraged by Wayne's naughty dose of generosity. No word on the outcome of this encounter, though Moore mentioned that Wayne and Sinatra were a bit wary of one another privately though publicly remained on good terms from then on (Could alcohol have fuel both men's stubborn stances? I wonder).
