Coming soon DVDs and Blu-rays from the Criterion Collection
Criterion is releasing Stagecoach on DVD and Blu-ray on May 25th. Along with a new, restored high-def transfer, one of the special features is Bucking Broadway (1917), an early Ford western with a music score by Donald Sosin.
Other new Criterion releases due in May on Blu-ray include Fritz Lang's M (May 11) and Roeg's Walkabout (May 18).
For any other Godard fans, Vivre Se Vie comes out April 20 on Blu and standard DVD and Leo McCarey's Make Way For Tomorrow comes out on standard DVD on Feb 23.

Also coming in July from Criterion on DVD:
A pair of Ozu films, The Only Son (1936) and There Was a Father (1942).
An Eclipse set with four Sacha Guitry films from the 30s:
The Story of a Cheat (1936)
The Pearls of the Crown (1937)
Désiré (1937)
Quadrille (1938)
I'm unfamiliar with Sacha Guitry but this set looks interesting.

I'm not familiar with Guitry either. Is he a part of Truffaut's dreaded French "tradition of quality"?

Re: Coming soon DVDs and Blu-rays from the Criterion Collection
The 'Qualité France' label created by Truffaut has always made me laugh. It's true that some French films of the 50s are now a bit dated. But French cinema in the 30s and 40s contains probably more masterpieces than the New Wave. As for Guitry, even Truffaut had to recognise that he loved Le Roman d'un Tricheur which he went to see countless times in Paris cinemas...ChiO wrote:I'm not familiar with Guitry either. So I would say: discover Guitry ASAP. He was a fabulous play-wright, actor, director and wit. Criterion presents him as the French Noël Coward. I can't say any better.

When I finally got around to watching several Julien Duvivier films about a year ago, it struck me that Truffaut appeared to have borrowed generously from him in his filming of children. It also made me wonder if Truffaut had second thoughts about his remark as he moved from critic-auteur to director-auteur.Ann Harding wrote:

Okay, I'll bite.
Orson Welles
Samuel Fuller
Nicholas Ray
Douglas Sirk
Howard Hawks
Roberto Rossellini
Otto Preminger
Robert Bresson
Jean Renoir (a curious case: if there are sides, did either side reject or downplay him?)
Stanley Kramer (he was not appreciated by the auteurists; I like his films even less)
Alfred Hitchcock
Frank Tashlin
Joseph Mankiewicz
George Cukor
To rephrase slightly: Who do I think they were right about? The ones who immediately come to mind:Who were they right about?

Those that they touted for whom my one-man jury is still out (i.e. I enjoy many of their films, but feel luke-warm at best for about as many):Who were they wrong about?

Re: Coming soon DVDs and Blu-rays from the Criterion Collection
It looks as if Criterion will release on August 10th some great Von Sternberg silents. The Last Command and Underworld are mentioned. Hopefully Docks of New York will be too.
Re: Coming soon DVDs and Blu-rays from the Criterion Collection
This is uncanny. I just mentioned these on another forum in which we were discussing favorite silent films. I'm very glad to see that The Last Command is getting a release. I can certainly recommend that film.Ann Harding wrote:It looks as if Criterion will release on August 10th some great Von Sternberg silents. The Last Command and Underworld are mentioned. I'm so glad Criterion isn't among those who seem to be abandoning DVDs for Blu-ray.

Re: Coming soon DVDs and Blu-rays from the Criterion Collection
Robert Israel had told me back in March after the premier of THE MAGICIAN on TCM, that He was busy scoring another project, but didn't give any details at that time. This is huge, and completely unexpected! On the downside, there is no CHILDREN OF DIVORCE in the group.
What is so amazing is that I never thought I would see any of these movies on DVD ahead of THE BIG PARADE? I mean we are talking about 3 Paramount owned Silents here, So what gives Warner's, huh? If the TCM broadcast next week is going to be the not so new, but still unseen 2004 restoration, surely someone would have said something about it somewhere by now? Therefore I have to assume that it will not be. If it is going to be the newest restoration, they should an announcement of some sort??? The fact that there hasn't been leads me to believe that it will be some old same old.
Don't forget that THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS (1920), and THE VANISHING AMERICAN (925) will both be brand new never before aired restorations and qwith fresh scores! MOHICANS has been shown before, but not with Music by Mont Alto Orchestra. As far as I know VANISHING AMERICAN is a TCM premier in any form. David Shepard hopes these will see a DVD release later on, but that is still yet to be determined.
