Oh then the joke's on me for trusting the source where I got the picture and its claim it was Dexter...so maybe there's hope he aged better after all!

Watching "The Crooked Way" (1949-Robert Florey) this afternoon and enjoying the work of John Payne, Ellen Drew, Percy Helton, and Samson the Cat very much, it occurred to me (not for the first time) that this might have been a headline for Payne's non-musical ventures into darkness (i.e. Kansas City Confidential, 99 River Street, and more). It certainly applies to today's show on TCM....Didn't it even occur to the doctors at the Veteran's Hospital to tell him to take it easy with that shrapnel in his head?

Ha! Few people can take a punch as good as Payne. His fight scenes are different from most, more realistic or just plain painful somehow.
Love his films like The Crooked Way. He's like Dick Powell, transitioned smoothly from musical comedies to tough guy films noir.
