O.K! The Glory Guys on August 31! (James Caan's day)---Harve Presnell and Tom Tryon fighting over Senta Berger!
Reminds me of my college days! Who wouldn't enjoy two gorgeous men fighting to be at your side?

A Sam Peckinpah script of a thinly veiled Battle of the Little Big Horn, Andrew Duggan appears as General McCabe (Custer), and Tom Tryon as a composite of Captain Benteen and other officers who had to defend a portion of the actual area under fire when command broke down. Those during the actual campaign who risked their lives to get water were awarded the Medal of Honor. The Young and The Restless' Jeanne Cooper plays the cold-hearted, mean-spirited Mrs. McCabe.

The sexy scout is Harve Presnell, and I just wish he would break into song just once...."Colorado...my home"... or "They Call the Wind Mariah." All that great scenery! And the mountains, too!

James Caan, whose Irish accent fluctuates a bit during his repartee with Slim Pickens and Peter Breck as his commanding officers, is adorable in one of his earlier efforts. It's obvious he has that electricity on screen, and is an adorably colorful character in this film that some claim is a thinly veiled remake of Fort Apache.

Michael Anderson, Jr. is endearing as a young recruit. Dallas McKennon (from the Daniel Boone television series has a small, but noticable part.) Veteran character actress Alice Backes and Elvis Presley co-star Laurel Goodwin play a mother and daughter helping nurse Anderson's character back to health.

Filmed in Durango, Mexico, by the great James Wong Howe, there are some lovely cinematic moments sweeping the screen, and it's homage to John Ford cannot go unnoticed. The opening credits are introduced by the title song of the same name, which is a little pretentious, but still fitting, and enjoyable as an introduction to the ensuing action. Don't miss this underappreciated gem!

Re: Summer Under the Stars: August 2012 Schedule

A bit late, but if you have a chance, Lionel Barrymore fans might want to catch a couple of the actor's least known but interesting movies on TCM today. You can see all the films for August in the list above.:

1:45pm (ET)
This Side of Heaven (1934-William K. Howard)

Fay Bainter made her film debut in this Lionel Barrymore movie about a family caught up in their own individual lives, while Daddy Lionel carries the world on his shoulders. His solution to his family problems may be a bit surprising. A forgotten gem, half-soap opera, half-William Inge precursor with some pokes at materialism, social status, and the limitations and freedom from all this that may or may not be solved by love. This movie, which takes place within 24 hours of one day, features an excellent, relatively restrained performance from Mr. B. More can be seen here:

3:15pm (ET)
The Return of Peter Grimm (1935-George Nicholls, Jr.)
Image

This film appears to be a TCM premiere and might be a really intriguing movie from RKO about a disbeliever (Lionel) who scoffs at religion and the afterlife, even though he is dying. Reportedly censored because of content regarding religious cant, the need for women's liberation, the film was based on a David Belasco play (and had been filmed previously in 1926). The photographic process developed by Lucien Andriot, featuring Barrymore as a ghost was quite notable at the time. Helen Mack, a favorite gamine of the period had a featured role in this movie as well. More can be seen here:

10:15pm (ET)
Night Flight (1933-Clarence Brown)

Based on the fine French writer-aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupery's poetic novel of the same name, MGM gives this story the all-star treatment with a cast that includes Lionel & John Barrymore, Clark Gable, Myrna Loy and Helen Hayes in the ol' chestnut (at least it's old now)--about getting the medicine flown to the sick via air. Several of our members have seen this movie at the TCM Film Festival as well as revivals in NYC. I'd love to know their thoughts on this.

Thanks so much for simplifying this great August lineup, Moira! Cagney is a must. Anthony Quinn is up there, as well, though I wish TCM had included the marvelous "La Strada". Cool, though, that Jimmy Caan is receiving a special day.

Name-dropper alert:

Jimmy is absolutely one of the nicest guys in the business.

I can't wait for Tuesday to try to see some of the wall-to-wall Jimmy C.--especially City for Conquest (1940), one of my all time sentimental faves.

I am looking forward to your take on The Seventh Veil, kingrat. Mason is pretty charismatic, though what a handful!

I saw The Sea Gull sometime in the '70s but it is now all a blur, except that Vanessa Redgrave was superb, (but when isn't she?). I don't know how I'll feel about it now. I am very fond of James Mason's Brutus in Julius Caesar and think that Evil Under The Sun (1982) is great fun--though Mason is only onscreen relatively briefly in that all-star cast.

I think you'll like Vacation From Marriage, which is somewhat enjoyable. I always liked Kerr best in her British movies; she seems so much more relaxed than she ever did at MGM---and I loved aspects of The Hucksters, but really never believed that Gable would toss Ava Gardner away for the patrician widow Kerr plays in this movie.

I do think that Tea and Sympathy is interesting, if unbelievably sad. The film, almost stage bound despite Vincente Minnelli's direction, is shot through with everyday, casual cruelty that is the lasting memory I have of the movie. Not for the first time, the peripheral characters are particularly good in this movie. They are played by Leif Erickson as Kerr's frightened, rigid hubby (How many times did he play these kind of parts?? i.e. The Snake Pit, Invaders From Mars), Edward Andrews as John Kerr's cold father, and Darryl Hickman as one of the few boys at this prep school who isn't hateful--though he is at a loss as to how to help John Kerr play his impossible role.

I know what you mean about finding the sheer number of films in August a bit overwhelming sometimes.

Did anyone watch the movie Vacation from a Marriage Monday morning early, starring Deborah Kerr and Robert Donat? I thought it was a charming film! I really love these early UK movies Deborah made, she's so different, so much freer in her acting than in the American films. And it had Glynis Johns in it, always a plus.

I also watched The Hucksters, which I just loved. It really resonates with me, dealing with issues not often found in films. For instance, the way a job can eat at you if your company has no integrity, and if they expect you not to have any either. I thought the triangle was most interesting and played out beautifully, thanks to really high class acting all around. I really believed Gable here, his sincerity with Kerr was lovely, and I loved the note of surprise he injected into the part, as if he were the last one to believe that he could settle for one woman, but she was the only one for him.

Jacks, I recorded it to watch when I get home (house sitting right now). I have seen this charming movie before, stumbled upon it one day and was hooked from the start. Glynis Johns is wonderful, isn't she? From her fresh-faced youth in Vacation From Marriage, through her lush beauty in The Court Jester, her lusty bartender in The Sundowners right up to her lovely old age in While You Were Sleeping, she is one of those actors I will always watch.

Until I saw VFM, I always thought of Robert Donat as a rather weak, fussy man. This one was an eye-opener. Then to see him with Dietrich in Knight Without Armour....whoa. (I had forgotten his role in The 39 Steps)

Donat can do anything, though his specialty was fussy old men, which he played superbly. It's funny when you see him play a different role, then you realize how good he really was. He's one of my favorites with Knight Without Armour at the top of the list. Also love The Magic Box. He's so self destructive in that one, it's the dark side of his usual gentle souls.

I can't wait to see what you think of VFM!

The funny thing about Glynis is, Alice and I just watched While You Were Sleeping night before last! I almost woke her up early just to show her how stunning Glynis was. Guess I'll have to dig up my copy of The Court Jester for her.

Say, I'd love to see a Glynis Johns SUTS day, or in fact, a SOTM tribute. She deserves it.

I love VFM! I recorded it so I can watch whenever I want... As you said recently, my DVD collection is edging me out the door. I love to record them, but I am so busy recording, I don't have time to watch....there's something wrong with this picture.....  Kind of like the fact I have more YARN than I will ever get around to knitting.
