70's

Post by GaryCooper »

Movie portended what was coming for the American male. Divorce rates are sky-high and feminism has a strong footing in today's America.

Sad to see Myra so far down. It’s a rather faithful adaptation of the book for the most part.

He has a lot of movies ranked low that I enjoyed quite a bit, like Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion, Tristana, and Start the Revolution Without Me. In fact, those first two would be in my top ten for the year.
Watching until the end.

I'm pleased to see Donkey Skin high on the list, a film I enjoyed very much but have not seen for yonks. I Never Sang for My Father places fairly high as well, just below another favorite, The Boys in the Band.

I knew Robert Anderson, the playwright/screenwriter of I Never Sang for My Father. I learned a lot from him. Lovely man. The original Broadway cast of the play starred Hal Holbrook, Teresa Wright (Bob's wife at one time), and Lillian Gish. Bob of course also wrote Tea and Sympathy.

Myra could have been worse. I still loved Mae West in it, and I do feel the film is better than its reputation as one of the worst films ever made. It's middling, rather than outright bad. However, the final film on the list, Zabriskie Point was one that bored me senseless.

Yes, that's the part I'm referring to. At the 2:10 point, someone has inserted the portion with the f-bomb that was included on the pan-and-scan VHS release.
My mother has that VHS version.

I'm not sure why it is missing from the widescreen DVD release as well as from the digital print that has aired on TCM.

Yeah, Antonioni is “amateur” as Bergman put it (see the discussion in the neorealism thread).

How did you happen to see Puzzle of a Downfall Child and Something for Everyone, if you recall? I understand that they are not easy to find.

Little Big Man and Lovers and Other Strangers would also be high on my list. I've only seen 28 of these films, and I am not overly fond of The Landlord (by the numbers, for my taste, with Lee Grant making the most obvious acting choices) or The Ballad of Cable Hogue (not usually a Jason Robards fan) but I could say a kind word or two about The Kremlin Letter (great cinematography) or Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion or There Was a Crooked Man. As for Zabriskie Point, it is as purty to look at as it is brainless and dated. I'm always interested in your observations.
I saw both Puzzle of a Downfall Child and Something for Everyone on YouTube, one just this year, the other several years back. Both have received DVD releases, and I do now have a copy of the Dunaway film. The YouTube print of Something for Everyone was admittedly washed out, but it still preserved the fine performances of Angela Lansbury, Michael York, and Jane Carr.

The Kremlin Letter isn't a truly bad film (I have been working on ranking the 90s films for another thread and there are some truly ghastly films to the bottom of those lists that I despise), but it is an uncomfortable one, and I docked it a few positions for a particularly nasty rape/murder sequence late in the film. That said, it had a strong cast, and as usual, John Huston did a good job directing it. Investigation of a Citizen was just a little too repetitive for its own good, and There was a Crooked Man was a bad combination of being both bitter and painfully slow.
