I have to admit Ryan O'Neal did a good job on that film, given (sorry) what I feel was a weak screenplay and (again, sorry) Ali's basically inept performance. I think a better actress would have made me care about whether that character lived or died.
Ryan has some lovely subtle moments, particularly when the couple is visiting his parents for the first time. She worries about making a good impression, clothes-wise. We then see him gently and protectively brushing off a bit of lint from the back of her jacket. I actually remember Brando doing this similiar gesture with Kim Hunter in STREETCAR. I'd like to think O'Neal remembered it too.
As you know, I recently saw BRANNIGAN on ScreenPix (their idea of a St. Patrick's Day offering, lol) Now I see it is on the TCM schedule tomorrow, Saturday, March 23rd at 8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.

We are supposed to think Wayne's culture clashes with the Brits are oh so amusing, particularly Richard Attenborough who works for Scotland Yard. They are not.

Me too. That's why he's a detective and I'm still walking a beat. So far the
closest I've came is Tom Hanks and Roger Corman were both in Philadelphia
and Corman directed The Raven with Boris Karloff, who was in a number
of pictures with Lugosi. It's hard to find a one to one connection where one actor
was both in a Tom Hanks movie and a Bela Lugosi movie. Hmmm.

OMG. Just about every night I feel that hammer coming down and hitting me right
in the forehead. OUCH!
I remember a contemporary review of Brannigan making fun of Dukey's old
gnarled hands, implying that he was a bit long in the tooth for the role. I saw
it once a long time ago and will probably watch it tonight. They don't show
many John Wayne comedies.

Dargo, terrific addition with your Tom Hanks/PLAN 9 Bela connection!! Had no idea it's his favorite bad movie. I do remember him saying he thinks ATLANTIS, THE LOST CONTINENT, is one of the greatest films ever made, right up there with CITIZEN KANE. I am almost inclined to agree, lol.
