If I am correct, there are seven movies that have gotten double digit Oscar nominations, but not won any awards: The Turning Point, The Color Purple (11), The Gangs of New York, True Grit, American Hustle, The Irishman, Killers of the Flower Moon (10). Martin Scorsese has the dubious distinction of directing three of these movies. Four of these movies are clearly overrated, the fact that TCM shows no curiosity in showing The Turning Point suggests that it is the fifth, but the last two movies will live on.

I recorded the show but didn't watch it. I FF'd through it before I went to bed to see who won the major awards. I'll try to watch the highlights tonight. It seems the In Memoriam may have been the worst ever from reviews. How could they get lower????? They keep trying! The only big surprise seems to be Emma Stone (but not a big one; she was neck and neck) and I was surprised Oppie didnt get best screenplay.

I made a comment about it over in the I Just Watched thread, but to reiterate in part what I said over there, I loved Tina Turner, I thought she was a great singer, but I was left baffled by her getting the last spot of honor in the in memorium at a movie awards ceremony, given that she only appeared in a handful of films, and only had a substantial part in one of them.....

Plus three former nominees: Don Murray, Burt Young, and Michael Lerner were reduced to just type mention on a screen that the TV audience could not even read. Ugh.

Plus, I do think the idea to have a nearly completely nude presenter (save for a flesh colored loin cloth) last night as a homage to the 1974 streaker wasn't really in the Academy's best interest. It just came across as tacky.

My mistake, a fourth previous nominee was also given that treatment: Frederic Forrest.

You know, as bad as it was a few years ago when TCM's tribute left out Sally Kellerman (a big oversight), this seems even worse, reducing whole careers to just a little illegible piece of print without a picture......
