Gonzales Gonzales

Recent sightings: Last night on Support Your Local Gunfighter and
last week on The High And The Mighty.

Gonzales Gonzales (1925-2006) had a career that lasted 1953-1998. Sometimes listed as Pedro Gonzales Gonzales, and about six other
variations of that name.

First gained attention as a contestent on the quiz show You Bet Your Life, trading banter with Groucho Marx. (On the suggestion that they form
an act as "Gonzales, Gonzales and Marx, Groucho noted,"Two men in the
act and I get third billing.") Gonzales came to the attention of John Wayne, who offered him a contract, and a career was launched. I think
my first sighting of him was in the performance I saw last week -- as the
Mexican sailor in TH&TM who aids the emperiled plane by relaying
radio messages. He also performed in Hondo, Rio Bravo and
McLintock!.

There were also other movies not involving the Duke, and many appearences on TV.

A check of his filmography and bio brought some surprises:

--Never finished his education, and was a functional illiterate for the rest
of his life. His wife read scripts to him.

--Endured some "politically incorrect" flak due to the type of some of the
roles he played.

--He is the grandfather of actor Clifton Collins, Jr, who played cold-blooded killer Perry Smith to Philip Seymour Hoffman's Capote.

I always enjoyed spotting him, even though someone had to explain that
name to me. -- It was a custom to include the mother's maden name in
the naming of an infant, and his parents had the same last name before
they were married.
