Re: Did anyone celebrate Charles Dicken's birthday yesterday?

Here's a link Mary Kate to the films, they might be stocked by a rental service or library. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=mitchell+and+kenyon Thank you! In the slightly melancholy words of Edward Thomas: "The past is the only dead thing that s...

Interesting - "Hot Spot" is a little generic. But the one they chose makes the movie sound like a horror film.

Re: Ben Johnson

Geez, did Patrick Wayne ever have an ugly duckling day in his life? Cute at 10, and cute at 70. Took me a minute to find him, but there he was, in a pose reminiscent of Rusty on The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin ! Did you see him in Rookie of the Year , from Screen Directors Playhouse? Still in his tee...

Re: Gilbert Roland - A Latin Performer Unbounded

Ah, the Playhouse 90 Invitation to a Gunfighter . I've been curious about that one, it sounds intriguing. And it reminds me of a children's book I used to read, called The King, the Mice and the Cheese : A Kingdom brings in cats to get rid of the mice, then dogs for the cats, lions for the dogs, ele...

Re: Joel McCrea

Mary-Kate: I like "Gunsight Ridge." It's not great but I like to watch it. I recall that scene you mentioned and am reminded that he uses that charm several times. There is a similar instance where he "charms" one of the ranch owners into confirming how many head of cattle he ow...

Re: Did anyone celebrate Charles Dicken's birthday yesterday?

It's interesting that Nicholas Nickleby , one of the weakest, has done so well in adaptations. That does seem to be the general opinion on Nickleby. Maybe I'm missing something, but comparing the book to the play, I really can not see where they changed much for the stage. The book is rather in the...

Re: Ben Johnson

I was more than glad to share it. I was very moved by the story, and was sure other members would be as well.

Good continuing job with the screen-caps, which I would not call mundane, but definitely enjoyable. They introduce a welcome lighter note. :)

Re: Joel McCrea

I also think Joel McCrea was great. So honest, and genuine, with a quiet sense of humor. Also, as a bonus, tall and ruggedly handsome! I can't believe TCM never made him a star of the month before. A good McCrea Western that I haven't seen mentioned yet is Gunsight Ridge (1957)... There is a nice wr...

Re: Did anyone celebrate Charles Dicken's birthday yesterday?

Where abouts in Lancashire Mary Kate? He might know something of the cotton mills himself. If you want another couple of books from that time period that link you with the area although not by Dickens, Elizabeth Gaskell's Mary Barton and North and South are highly recommended by me. Thanks for the ...

Re: Gilbert Roland - A Latin Performer Unbounded

I was browsing a used book store several weeks ago, and there was a funny little story I read in a movie book at the time, in which Gilbert Roland explained why he had a certain aversion to stage work: Roland was playing Armand Duval in a stage production of Camille opposite Jane Cowl when they were...

Re: Ben Johnson

You're all so very welcome, and thank you. :) Paula, I'm glad you were able to find it, and I can't wait to see the full, scanned version. I'm actually rather anxious about what happened to him now ... I was relieved to find that apparently all Mr. Bowman wanted/needed was at least one speaking role...

Re: Did anyone celebrate Charles Dicken's birthday yesterday?

Yes, I celebrated it and was not impressed with my children's school for them not mentioning it "What do they teach them at these schools?" Does anyone have a favourite Dickens book? I can't decide, maybe Oliver Twist, perhaps Great Expectations. Hard Times is special because it's set in ...

Re: Ben Johnson

Paula, from what I can make out, the title might be “Not in the Script”, by Grady Johnson. It was published before the release of She Wore A Yellow Ribbon , a footnote says the film is “to be released later this year.” I don't know if that information will help or not. Below, I've put together in or...

Re: Did anyone celebrate Charles Dicken's birthday yesterday?

Oh darn, I forget. Should have watched The Pickwick Papers (1952). My internet connection was gone most of the day, otherwise I would have been reminded of it by Google (my lame excuse.) Too funny about the Magwitch imitation! Even scarier would have been an Orlick (regrettably absent from the...

Mary-Kate, do you mind if I add that Reader's Digest info you found to my webpage? In fact, do you have the link to that? Thanks. Certainly not; go right ahead. Goodness knows how much material you've shared with us! Here is the link, but it's for a snippet view only: http://books.google.com/books?...
