Re: George Raft

My problem with ONE, TWO, THREE is that it's not THE APARTMENT. You're right! It's not. It's funnier. THE APARTMENT is basically a drama. The satire of ONE, TWO, THREE may seem a bit dated today but for it's time it was dead on. In the same way that THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING, THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING ...

Re: YOU Tube'n

The fight you are thinking of could be the one included in the link above. Coop and Marc Lawrence get all handsie with each other as they tussle in a doorway taking turns gouging each others eyes out. Lang fills the soundtrack with the outside street ambiance as the two men fight almost in silence.

Re: El Cid

It does seem that many successful directors of the 50s, who had found their niche making certain types of films, got sucked into the ego boost of the epic-style of film-making that exploded in the 60s. Mann was one of those directors and his career suffered for it.

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Raft is an ex con, I think, down on his luck when he inherits the check for a million bucks from the millionaire. He can't cash the check. It's worse than that. Raft is a convicted forger so no one believes that the million dollar check is legit. At the end he signs the check over to a proprietor o...

Re: ALFRED HITCHCOCK

So do you love THE PARADINE CASE for how it is now released or how you imagine Hitchcock's version would had looked?

Personally I could never sit through this whole quagmire and find Greg Peck in a powdered wig silly looking.

Re: YOU Tube'n

I'm thrilled to find that someone uploaded Gary Cooper's last film and his only real "thriller", The Naked Edge (1961), co-starring Deborah Kerr. I'm not sure what a real thriller means but Coop did make a war-time nuclear espionage thriller, CLOAK & DAGGER, back in 1946. In some ways...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

We loved THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL . The theater was at least two-thirds full, and the audience applauded at the end. I recently read that this film is now this years biggest world-wide money maker for......how do I phrase this, for films out of the mainstream. The article broke down what film...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

My favorite of those you listed is They Were Expendable. It's a very subtle performance he gives in the film, very moving and heroic in a soft spoken way. Many vets of WWII say that this movie is how it really was. I couldn't agree more. Montgomery gave many fine, nuanced performances during his ca...

Re: Captain From Castile

Unfortunately Power gives the least interesting performance in The Razor's Edge (the character as portrayed in Maugham's novel was sandblasted by the studio in order to make him presentable to the Code and general audiences) and he was unable to bring this paper saint to life. I've never read the n...

Re: John Ford

O'Neill in his prime was not exactly Ford's cup of tea -- too much despair, not enough optimism. But the stories selected for this film were all from early stage works when O'Neill was getting started and they all were about the author's love of the sea. That was something that the two men had in co...

Re: Do You Have Trouble getting others to watch classics?

Well, it was the 60s. Jewish humor was mainstream then. Come to think of it, John Stewart keeps it alive every night on the Daily Show. Maybe it's never left us. And Sherman had a comic singing voice which suited his material to a tee. Before he hit it big as a best-selling recording artist he had a...

Re: Do You Have Trouble getting others to watch classics?

Allan Sherman may of had a short life span as a top comedy recording artist but a lot of what he did still sounds good today (at least to me...) During his heyday he toured a lot in concert settings and I always wondered how often he performed this number live? It's orchestration calls out for a rat...

Thanks everyone.
I don't know if it will stay up as Warner Records has a claim on the Sherman tune.
This video will look rather pointless if the soundtrack is taken off.

Re: Do You Have Trouble getting others to watch classics?

I say play Laurel & Hardy along side some contemporary music to get the young folks interested. You know, mix in The Boys antics with a little Katy Perry, or a little Justin Bieber (very little), or some fashionable rapper who's name I cannot pronounce. Or even that most modern of song-smith.......
