I'm hoping to see The Bitter Tea of General Yen tomorrow night, if all goes as planned. I haven't seen it all in ages and to have a chance to view it on the big screen is too exciting for words. Wow! You are so lucky. That's such a beautiful looking picture, I bet it looks amazing on the big screen...

Actually, it was me. I never got any replies. I deleted my post because I found a solution to the problem (my Dad had the channel and didn't know it).

Germania Anno Zero (1947)

The third of Rossellini's "War Trilogy" (Open City (1945) and Paisan (1946) are the first two), I was really glad to finally have a recording of this. Did anybody watch?

I finally got ahold of The Bitter Tea of General Yen recently. I've not watched it yet, but I am very much anticipating it. Alot of folks claim it as their favorite Babs film...so needless to say, I'm 'intrigued'. It would be hard to beat Ball of Fire though. The more times I watch that film the be...

Man on Fire (1957) is a great one! I have been waiting for it to come back on.

However, I think Powell/Pressburger photographed Sabu to look rather attractive and regal, despite his being sometimes presented as a figure of fun. It's as though we were seeing shown both aspects and must judge for ourselves. I very much see Sabu's character "the young General" as a Chr...

There is a lot of great stuff on tomorrow: He Ran All the Way (1951) John Garfield's last film and one of his best. Nick Robey is a small time crook who holds a family hostage in their apartment. Garfield really runs the gamut of emotions here. If you're not a fan or haven't seen much of his work, t...

Thanks, Mr. Arkadin! That was far out, man! A great friday song. I wish I had that saxophonist's shirt. :) Sesame Street is one phenomenal show. Isn't it still on the air? I think that may have been a little boy on the fire escape(?) That reminds me of pleading with my mother (in the early '70's) t...

I have always prefered Frankenstien, because of the nature of the role and the thoughts behind the film. Can a man be as God and create life? And what are we to say of his creation? Karloff also balances the role well between sympathy, pity, and sheer menace. The scene in the windmill where the crea...

Re: the KILLING

Hi Judith - Glad you had an opportunity to see THE KILLING this a.m. And while you might not have been completely knocked out by it, it's a movie that definitely benefits from multiple viewings. The intricate (and at the time fairly revolutionary for American movies) method Kubrick utilized to unra...

It's hard to pick, but I would say a huge influence would obviously be Orson Welles who pulled from the German Expressionistic era (which also continued to flow through horror films of the 30's) and his considerable knowlege of the stage and lighting. Though his first 2 films were not the first to u...

Black Narcissus (1947)

My favorite of Pressburger and Powell's work. Shows today. Thoughts or comments?

I have mixed feelings about Brando. When the part was right for him (Streetcar is a fine example) and he was "on", he was incredible. In other roles he seems to overact or be completely out of place. It will be interesting to view the documentary and get some new insights. I do wish TCM co...
