There's never been a film that could live up to Robert Penn Warren's book PERIOD.

I will say though that although the film was a trainwreck, Brodrick Crawford and Mercedes McCambridge were believeable as Stark and Sadie and played their roles well.

"They're white friend. And old Sam, well, old Sam was an Indian." "Well I'll be damned. I never knew you had to be anything, but a corpse to get into Boot Hill. How long's this been going on?" "Since the town got civilized. Oh, it's not my doin boys, I've always treated ever...

What makes "Best Years" different from so many war films in my opinion, is the humor and sense of hope this picture has. Many films like this are ones of object fatalism (which in some cases are what is needed). In this film though, heartbreak is balanced with humor in a way rarely shown b...

Day of the Outlaw (1959) is my favorite B-western and Ives is wonderful in it. Also including Robert Ryan and Tina Louise, this "Noir Western" evokes comparisons to Key Largo (1947) and On Dangerous Ground (1952). TCM hasn't shown it in at least four years. You can find DVD prints of it h...

I'm glad Act of Violence is reshowing. One of my faves. Van Heflin is probably one of the most underated actors out there. As for showing my namesake, it all depends on which version they show. Hopefully the one recut to Welles notes as the that is the most superior one in my opinion. It's said that...

Looks like a great month. I personally hated David and Lisa though. I remember seeing it after Dad told me that he and Mom saw it in the theater and just walked out. I thought "Ah that's just old Dad he doesn't know anything. :P " I found out our tastes were more similar than I realized.

A very underated actor who most people considered just a personality. He was usually only known for his comedic skills which were amazing in themselves. Look at the scenes in His Girl Friday (1940) where he and Russell run though lines at 80 miles and hour, yet they are perfectly in sync and taking ...

I guess probably the original Psycho (1960). I was also pretty young when I saw it (10-12?). Interestingly, there's not really a lot of violence shown in the film. In the shower scene we never see the knife touch flesh and although we see blood, we don't see wounds. The cuts (over 80! ), sou...

I have problems with The Hustler as well. It's not the acting, it's the writing. There are several awkward moments and dead spots in that film. Also, some of the lines that Newman has to say during the last pool game are just stupid sounding. I think he does the best he can with the material, but th...

I would say it is definitely the greatest film of the sound era. I hate when people say "best all time" because it's art, and art is largely a matter of taste. I personally love the film (and almost all of Welles work), but I can understand why some people would be left shaking their heads.

I'm interested. My only problem might be trying to find a copy of the book in my area or the local library. Some books, especially specialty types cost quite a bit of change. I pretty much buy books used or check 'em out of the library so I kinda have to take what I can find. Your library should be...
