Re: General literature question

Did anyone make it through high school without having been assigned to read The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne for English class? Yes, I made it through high school without such assignment. That was in the mid-to-late 1970s. But I also made it through high school without taking an american l...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

I saw Vicky Christina Barcelona in theaters when it first opened last year, and thought it was terrific! I'm not a big fan of Woody Allen but think he's made a few good pictures in recent years. In my opinion the story was very cleverly developed and all the roles well-cast. The ménage-a-trois worke...

Re: The Warner Archive

R. Emmett Sweeney's comment: "Chapters are programmed every ten minutes regardless of the shot." appears to jibe with what Miss Goddess posted, and with other posts I've seen on these DVDs so far, and with my own experience. The DVDs don't have traditional chapter markers as most of us thi...

Re: GARBO!

Miss Garbo didn't smile much, did she? Perhaps that was part of her mystique. She doesn't need a smile, though, to look beautiful -- and attractive. She's got a great pout. :)

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

This weekend I've watched Madame Curie on YouTube; it had been decades since I last/first saw this picture (on television). Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon sure are a great combination, good on-screen chemistry and I've read they were friends in real life too. I was surprised how accurate the movie ...

My two favorite female entertainers, Agnes M. and Judy G., both had Scottish ancestry. Let's hear it for the scottish immigrants, and for the ones still in the highlands. :)

Re: DEWEY'S RECORD PARTY!

Yet another little walk back through time with a Record Party salute to this very week in Detroit Top 40 history—all compliments of our friends at WKNR – KEENER 13! What a happening little week it was! Dewey, thank you for The Beatles . Those tunes immediately brightened up a sickly Friday afternoo...

Re: Double roles

I'm not really familiar with Patty Duke, although I've heard the name. I wonder whether her show was ever shown in the U.K.? Great clip, though. Having an actor playing double roles in a weekly sitcom must have made the logistics of it much more difficult. This has been done quite a bit on U.S. tel...

Re: Les Enfants du Paradis aka Children of Paradise (1945)

I saw this picture 20+ years ago at the old Theater 80 on St. Mark's Place. My recollection of it is not detailed, but I loved it, particularly Jean-Louis Barrault, one of my favorite french actors. What stands out most in my memory about this film is the closing shot (I won't describe it to avoid s...

Re: Inching Into the 21st Century

Well, since I'm a Mac technician, I would recommend a Mac for you. A 20 inch iMac if you want a desktop machine, or a MacBook if you want portability. The MacBook screen is kind of small at 13.3 inches, but the MacBook Pro with 15.4 inch screen costs quite a bit more. [At home I have a 3+ year old 1...

Re: The Warner Archive

Mrs. Parkington arrived today. I'm happy with the DVD -- the image quality is good. As more of AM's titles become available I'll definitely order -- even though it's a bit expensive. Here's a screen cap just to give you an idea of the quality  http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/961/lamoue.th....
