Re: What are you reading?

From what I have read thus far, the articles are more autobiographical. I am not sure where they were from originally. To me, it feels like they were pages of an autobiography-in-progress that were just gathered together later. Unfortunately, there haven't been any of his plays in it. A shame, for I...

Re: Do You Have Trouble getting others to watch classics?

Ok, so I lied a bit. I do like "The Avengers" movie "Midnight in Paris", and a few other newer ones. In general, though, I dislike modern cinema due to the fact that plot and characters are no longer the driving force in a film. Special effects and "pushing the envelope"...

Re: What are you reading?

Yes! The book is quite good, and adds several more layers of depth to the story than the movie does. The character Howl is quite different in his personality and motivations, as well. Thanks for the book recommendations! I actually almost rented "A Quite Remarkable Father" instead of the t...

Re: What are you reading?

I just finished reading Dianne Wynne Jones' "Howl's Moving Castle" and its sequel "Castle in the Air." The books are so much better than the movie, as is usually the case with such things. My curiosity piqued by July's Star of the Month, I am now reading "Trivial Fond Record...

Re: Upcoming Releases of Classic Films on DVD

"A Double Life" (1947) will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray September 18th!

I have personally never seen this movie, but I have heard that it is excellent. It's also the film for which Ronald Colman won an Oscar for Best Leading Role. I'm really excited for this release! :D

Re: George Raft

What's interesting about "Souls at Sea" is that it has been erroneously reported that George Raft received a Best Supporting Academy Award nomination for his role. Definitely not true, although Powdah certainly ranks as one of his best roles of the 30s and the film was likely his biggest ...

Re: July Star of the Month: Leslie Howard

JackFavell, it is funny how alike we are in our tastes! :) Ah yes, Kay Francis is wonderful. I was introduced to her via the film "Trouble in Paradise" that was shown on TCM a few years ago. I really wanted to watch and/or record her Summer Under the Stars day, but I was not home to do so....

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

This evening I watched "Tonight and Every Night" on TCM. While I didn't particularly care for the film overall (one of the main reasons being a lack of believability), I was blown away by Marc Platt's dance numbers! I had never seen Marc Platt in anything before, to my knowledge, but I am ...

Re: Do You Have Trouble getting others to watch classics?

Thankfully, my family enjoys old movies almost as much as I do. Though I am crazier about them than anyone I know (in person). I try to host classic movie showings in my community, but nobody ever shows up. More than once I've watched a few favorites on the big screen all by my lonesome. To be fair,...

July Star of the Month: Leslie Howard

This is a little late, but I would like to comment on the TCM "Star of the Month" program from July, as it really helped me better appreciate the life and career of Mr. Leslie Howard. Previous to July 2012, the only Leslie Howard movies I had seen were "The Petrified Forest" and ...

Re: Greetings, all!

Welcome! I like your musical tastes. I've been interested in 1920's jazz for a while, but I don't know that much about it, really. Interested to hear your thoughts, if you want to start a thread about it. I love 1920s jazz too and all your favourite actors and actresses, I'm glad you joined us. Wel...

Re: Bad Movies You Love

See? :D Ahaha, so I see! Well, it's great to meet another fan! And I'm glad you like my avatar. I was going to go with Ronald Colman, but I do love this pic of Mr. Calleia. :) As horror films go, Vincent can be proud of his record. No, they're not on the level of James Whale or Island of Lost Souls...

Re: Greetings, all!

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone! And thanks for helping me get an account set up, movieman1957! Ah ha! It's good to know there are more Calleia and Powell fans out there. I am sure JackFavell and I shall get along great! I am glad to meet another "American Songbook" fan, too, MissGod...

Greetings, all!

Hello, I have long been a "lurker" on this forum, having discovered it through my frequent Google searches for classic film information and photos. I finally was able to join you on this forum, and I am very excited; it is very rare to find classic film fans in my day-to-day dealings, and ...

Re: Bad Movies You Love

While I really like Vincent Price as an actor, I must admit that some of his horror films aren't really cinematic gold; still, I enjoy them greatly. In fact, I made a point the other night to stay up late to watch "The House on Haunted Hill." I heard somewhere that in the original showing ...
