That is a lovely story. Everything I ever read about John Wayne shows him to have been a very decent man.

Re: John Wayne, Lest We Forget
I wonder how many regular kids have that kind of freedom anymore, either! Not to many I suspect. I know my brothers reaction when I suggested if my niece wanted to come up and ride when he could not drive her was that she get on the train and I would meet her at the station. I may as well have sugg...

Re: John Wayne, Lest We Forget
Thanks for the link. It is really lovely the way John Wayne's family record his life. I guess one of the things he really did give his children was a strong sense of loyalty. Given the Hollywood environment it was a wonderful gift. I wonder how many superstars children today could look back and say ...

That soldier behind is Fred Libby a Ford regular. (The one with the beard) he was one of the Cleggs in Wagonmaster , the one who was whipped. I recognose the face of the other one as a Ford regular but can't put a name to him. The bit players are often stuntmen. It maybe Post Parks who was the most ...

Re: John Ford
With regard to "Thursday's Charge", a painting we don't see, I always imagined it must have had a real life correlation, maybe to a painting of Custer? I know there is one scene at the finale where all the men are surrounded and they form an almost triangular tableau that is taken directl...

Re: John Ford
It is an interesting view that Thursday equates to Macarthur. Ford seemed to regard him as quite godlike in They were Expendabley. Or being Ford perhaps he was capable of recognising the dangers of creating godlike military heroes from his own experience and used film to paint his views. Actually th...
Re: Dobe
I am very sorry to hear that. His book is one of my all time favourites and I always had a smile when he turned up on any of the old western shows.
It seemed like he was a lovely man

Re: Ben Johnson
That is a great story about Ben getting the role. He like so many others seemed to have an interesting and odd relationship with Ford. It was very notable that Ben thanked John Ford in that wonderful oscar acceptance. Best ever acceptance speech? :D I wonder if Ben ever said what he really felt abou...

Re: John Wayne, Lest We Forget
I finally got my copy of this book. It has some wonderful pictures, some from old shoots and some I have never seen before. I wish they had left the one with the elephant shooting out though. The Reagan pages are from an old interview. The pictures certainly show how close Wayne was to his children ...
Re: Hign Noon
Western Guy Much as I love the film, I can understand why the end can seem like a let down. Some one said it really needed a villain like Lee Marvin and I agree because Frank Miller was a bit of a letdown. Maybe they should have let Lee Van Cleef play Frank Miller as , Ian McDonald just doesn't have...

That's a lovely photo Paula, but the little girl looks very nervous ( not of Ben but the horse). And a "real" cowboy being seen in public with his horse's mane in plaits!!!!  In Australia if a guy gets caught out doing something to make his horse look pretty (like plaiti...

Re: Stunt Men and Women, the unsung heroes
I think Burt did many of his own stunts in The Crimson Pirate too. Lord he was beautiful in those days, especially swinging from yardarms and things. There are some famous old names in the Stuntman Hall of Fame. Ben is in it of course but the honorary intuctees are also interesting. http://www.stunt...
