Fan Mail

HI to all, Would anyone know how to obtain addresses to write to film stars at? If it's via their agent, how could I find out who that might be? I was thinking more however of an actress who I suppose is retired and no longer performing, given that she celebrated her 78th birthday in January. Jean S...

jdb1,

I couldn't agree more. This has become one of those films I can't see often enough, You've done a masterful job of critiquing it. Thanks so much.

Thanks Lynn, I knew I'd get an educated answer before too long. It make sense that the matting would make the uneducated viewer think he/she was missing something. Hopefully, more viewers will see the TCM feature that explains it and realize that the Fullscreen version is actually cheating them out ...

The most influential actress of the Golden Age

Here's one that could probably be debated forever, but here goes... Who do you feel is the most influential actress of the Golden Age? The actress that opened the doors for future generations to pass through. I'm tossed between Bette Davis and Kate Hepburn . Both had incredible presence on the scree...

Hi Ayres, When you mentioned Greer Garson, I had to stop and catch my breath. I honestly think she may be the most incredibly beautiful woman the screen has ever seen. And what an actress, Mrs Miniver , Random Harvest and Goodbye Mr Chips only scratch the surface of a very deep talent. I can't take ...

I'm sorry Filmlover, But I don't feel as though we owe anything whatsoever to the TCM board other than recognizing its existence. After all, it was their lack of moderation that let the situation escalate to a point where it drove almost all of the really knowledgeable people away. They simply lost ...

Hi Dewey, Yes, I have, in fact, seen The Champ on several occasions and it's almost guaranteed to make me mist over. It's far more than just a boxing movie, wouldn't you agree? The relationship between Wallace Beery and Jackie Cooper is what makes the movie memorable to me. I do agree that the viole...

Hello everyone, I guess that I'm lucky that I only have to wait until 1am to see the "schlockfest" as Moira so eloquently calls it. I'm wondering however if it's going to be a long term feature on TCM or not, as they've already started to rebroadcast the films that were shown at it's incep...

Why isn't Letterbox more available?

Hey there, good afternoon, I've noticed that on the majority of Encore channels, and even IFC and FMC, that most films seem to be shown "Panned and Scanned." Is Letterboxing prohibitively expensive? Are there other reasons why films are not shown in their normal ratio? Full screen presenta...

Was this not Sidney Lumet's first shot at directing a "major" motion picture? It seems that I had heard something to that effect on TCM, and if it's true makes the film all the more remarkable.

Hello everyone, I think that my favorite boxing film of them all might just be Somebody Up There Likes Me starring Paul Newman, Pier Angeli, Sal Mineo and I think Eileen Heckart as Rocky Barbella's mother. I think that in this movie the boxing was just the vehicle that a juvenile delinquent and dish...

Tomorrow is Forever

I've just seen Tomorrow is Forever for the first time and I was quite moved by it. I find Claudette Colbert a riveting presence no matter what the vehicle she happens to be in, and Orson Welles is similarly magnetic. I was so hoping that he would ultimately admit to who he really was but that's one ...

Here's one to consider for what it's worth -

Raymond Massey as Patricia Neal's husband and Gary Cooper's boss in The Fountainhead

or (it's a toss up) Fredric March and Louis Calhern in
Executive Suite

I too thought the first part was well worth all the hype and learned some very interesting new facts. One thing I'm curious about and maybe someone can help out. In the review cited above, the !962 remake of Mutiny on the Bounty was referred to as "disastrous" and I'm wondering why? I enjo...

Going Hollywood: The War Years

I just found out about a documentary made in 1983 titled Going Hollywood: The War Years. Would anyone have a copy that they can duplicate and then trade? Thanks very much.
