Re: Leslie Howard, Rosamund John, David Niven
Leslie Howards suffered from my first GWTW viewing, and I had great difficulty finding tolerance for him in a few other films I'd seen. But it was his SCARLET PIMPERNEL that gave him a new valuation in my mind and, after that, I've somehow flipped my negatives. I'm disappointed to see that 1942's SP...

Re: Humphrey Bogart's Birthday Bash
When I've read about Bogart's reluctance to do some of these oddball films, and then seeing how well he fits into them, or is able to deliver another variation on his standard character, I keep wondering what he thought about these 'oddball films' later in life. SWING and IT ALL are good examples of...

Re: The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1933)
...How do others feel about the use of stills in the restored (LOST HORIZON'S) DVD with audio to add scenes that had been cut previously? "It's the best we have" is my pathetic response to your question, and this film is one of my flash-points when I think of all the art that's lost - and...

Re: 'Round the World Weather Report
From Austin, Texas... Sunday, Dec 20th. I left the house at 4 a.m. for cat-breakfast fishing, my normal time. It was cool-ish, but still - low 40's? And clear. These past weeks, I've seen a paucity of carp (my preferred 'breakfast' for our park cats) but more white-bass, so fine... the cats don't se...

Re: The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1933)
My eye-opening Stanwyck film is JEOPARDY (1954, years before CAPE FEAR which receives more attention), and Stanwyck delivers a nuanced, conflicted, or psychozoidal performance all her own. Is she betraying her victimized-husband? Will she run off with Meeker to save Hubby or Meeker, or to have some ...

This film is getting my vote over on TCM for a showing. Thanks, Stuart.

Re: *CANDIDS*
Stuffing those two pix of Gladys and Cicely Tyson together is great for comparison. "Look at all that HAIR!" is my first notice, but then I see how each photo uses the mouth. Gladys' is flat, marblesque, and I can almost hear the photog saying, Still-Waters-Run-Deep. I know that, with a br...

Re: *CANDIDS*
Mongo's stuck this pix of Gladys Cooper up there and, in between the discussions of ways men have used women's looks, I find myself dissecting Gladys' photo. NO idea the year of this - she could be almost any age. But That Look of hers offers a virtual encyclopedic view of a woman's face. Hard, fier...

Re: *CANDIDS*
Actually, I first noticed the "insert" photo and was wondering, "Why the montage?" and then there was the "uncensored" on it. Huh? And this made me think of Lucille's glowering comments about her nudes being used against her at times, probably always by the smutty jerks...

Re: *CANDIDS*
Richard Long is the actor I'm always confusing with Gig Young. Years after I've seen him, I'll think "Gig Young in the MA & PA KETTLE films? In HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL? CRISS CROSS? CULT OF THE COBRA?" Even though he did BIG VALLEY (gag) and NANNY & THE PROFESSOR, I still never tied ...

Re: The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1933)
This was the third time I've seen this but the first time in several years. There was a print doing the Festival Circuit in 2000 or 2001, and I wish I knew which city had that print still showing! My history of Stanwyck starts with my disdain for the 1960's BIG VALLEY TV show. I never liked her. But...

Re: Humphrey Bogart's Birthday Bash
From the third Wednesday of Bogart's bash, I enjoyed THE BIG SHOT. I'd seen this in the '70s as part of a college course, and enjoyed the several scenes where the lighting was used from floor level, giving Bogart this underside-of-face-lit with huge back-shadows. Such a great effect. SPOILER FOR THE...
