Re: EXPERIMENT ALCATRAZ (1950) on TCM Jan 21
I don't watch INVASION OF SAUCER-MEN too often because I've got a good VHS tape (and don't want to risk the inevitable machine-eating-tape monster), and the PD versions are usually DivX'd nearly to death. But it's a strong film that needs to get onto a commercial DVD release. IT 's made it out there...

Re: 'Round the World Weather Report
Austin had a rainy day last Friday, but it looks like our Week O' Winter has been fulfilled as we've been pressing the 70f temp reading (20-21c) since then. We'll probably have a few more freezing nights ahead but, alas, it looks like our "coldest temps since 1976" will be relegated to a f...

Re: EXPERIMENT ALCATRAZ (1950) on TCM Jan 21
Dew, I wonder if the famous/infamous "Quota Quickies" in Britain were having an effect on American film-makers - sort of "If they can do it, I can, too" sort of mentality. I wonder if this was part of the momentum for Cahn (and Corman and others) to supply a load of these not-qui...

Re: Little Margaret
MrsL, I've wondered what incredible pressures the studio faced to prop up Margaret O'Brien, as if she was the '40s 'rescuer' in the same role as Shirley Temple in the '30s. That pressure was probably why some other title wasn't bestowed on this Journey For Margaret film. I also wonder how Billy Seve...

Re: God's Little Acre (1958)
Ark's comments about this being out-of-print kicked me into searching for it and I did find a DVD. This - and every other out-of-print debate - is good fodder for the Make-On-Demand places like Warners Archives and Universal-Vault. Those pricing structures, however, make me scan thru reseller opport...

Re: *CANDIDS*
I've got several conflicts about Carrey's work as well. I'm uncertain what his status will be in a hundred years. As we're nearing hundred-year anniversaries of many film careers in this next decade or so, I've never doubted their longevity. I can't say that about too many contemporary stars, though...

The Snorkel & More Hammer in Spring, 2010
I see that there's a new "Icons of Suspense-Hammer Films" collection due in a couple of months, showcasing more of Hammer's early pre-Horror cycle, including the fun criminal mastermind film, THE SNORKEL from 1958. Also: Stop Me Before I Kill (The Full Treatment) 1960 Cash On Demand (1961)...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
MrsL, I was so pleased with the modern RETURN TO WITCH MTN because it didn't include cussing. PLENTY of chances for bad language, but Dwayne Johnson exchanged it for harsh looks and stammering "you-you-you"'s. So well done, like that - I found the dialog was written with great demands on f...

Re: God's Little Acre (1958)
Thanks for another good recommendation. Why is it out-of-print? Is this another one of MissG's or CineMaven's evil attempts to get me? That's who I usually blame. Heck, we had a whole week of cold weather here in Texas, and I'm almost certain those two were the cause of it. They withhold snow from m...

CCFan, yes, these are only available 'on order' but we'll be getting quite a few, I believe.

Katy Jurado. I had never looked up her catalog of films. A Mexican actress, brought into some classic American films, and stayed working up to her death. I'm going to have to find more of her later work.

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
I love seeing how these war-adversary films have been constructed in the 20th Century. Obviously, this was an earlier theme in literature so they're a natural for films - even better, probably, because Actions Scenes are difficult in text-form.

Re: The Shout (1978)
I did get a decent copy of this, by the way. Thanks for the heads-up - I'd have skipped right over it. As it was, I also recorded the last 5 minutes of the preceding film, to see Jane Asher drop her drawers and swim & die in a pool of blood. So - let me get this straight - Jane is the Walrus?!!

Re: Little Margaret
The entire LOST ANGEL cast could have been brought back, time after time, as far as I'm concerned. I'd have loved to have seen a family series, or a husband-wife detective theme, using James Craig and Marsha Hunt. Even better to have matched all three in some kind of Thin-Man's-Nancy-Drew theme. Ah ...
